birthday on January 26 with a tea party and
family gathering at Copeland Lodge in
Wingham.
February
Lucknow District Lions Club donated
$2,000 to the Lucknow Fire Department to
launch their fund raising campaign to
purchase a pager system for the firemen.
Lucknow District Co-operative Inc. report-
ed a loss of $62,482 in 1982. It was the fourth
consecutive year the Co-op recorded a loss.
While improvement had been made in gross
margins and expense control these efforts
were offset by increases in interest costs.
Eileen Miller of West Wawanosh Town-
ship was proud to announce the arrival of
quadruplet lambs born to a Suffolk ewe in
her flock. Rare in Suffolk sheep, the quads
were ail female and doing well.
Lucknow Village Council appointed Gary
Austin as town foreman to replace Cliff
Crawford who retired. Doug Haldenby took
the position of village works employee
formerly held by Austin.
Lucknow tractor pullers Art and Barb
Helm competed against top European
tractors in Rotterdam, Holland and took first
place in the classes in which they competed.
It was the first time Canadian tractors had
been invited to compete in Europe, although
American tractors have competed in the
past.
Lucknow District Kinsmen Club donated
51,000 to the Lucknow Fire Department for
the purchase of the pager system for the
firemen.

Lucknow's oldest resident Isabelle Henry
celebrated her 101st birthday on March 1
when relatives and friends gathered at
Pinecrest manor.
The Lucknow Fleas won the 13th annual
Lucknow Legion Flea Hockey tournament for
the second consecutive year.
Lucknow figure skater Leisa Rau won the
Junior Ladies Prepared Solo event and the
Mary Barth award for placing first in the
Junior Ladies Interpretive Freestyle event at
the Interclub Figure Skating Competition
held in Mitchell March 6. Skaters from
fifteen area clubs competed in the competi-
tion.
The Huron Federaton of Agriculture
opposed the farm tax rebate program pro-
posed by the provincial Ministry of Agricul-
ture. Effective in 1984, the program would
enable a farmer to apply for 100 per cent
rebate of the taxes on his farm property,
land and farm buildings. The farmer would
pay 100 per cern of the tax on his house and

an imaginary or deemed lot. The lot,
because it could not be severed, would be
assessed at 50 per cent of a similar severed
lot. The proposal would shelter farmers from
a so called productive value assessment.
Farmers expressed concerns that they
would lose their property rights and the right
to use provincial roads if 100 per cent of their
farm tax was rebated.
The Huron federation proposed a task
force be established to look into an alterna-
tive to the present 50 per cent rebate.
Tracey Livingston of Ashfield Township
competed in the Junior Girls division of the
Ontario Youth Bowling finals in Toronto,
bowling a 571 triple.
Fire destroyed the barn of Allan and
Debbie Rhody on concession 10 of Kinloss
Township March 9,
Area Junior Frrners Nora Van Dyke and
Audrey Ritchie took a month long tour of
Australia and New Zealand along with Kathy
Pentland, Ralph Morrison, Roger Morrison
and Ralph Nivens. They were among 45
members of Junior Farmer clubs from the
counties of Huron, Bruce, Perth and Grey to
take the trip.
Rick Martin of Lucknow won first in the
Lions Public Speaking competition in Ripley,
March 15 earning the right to proceed to
western Ontario level competition.
Donna Raynard of Ashfield Township
placed third in the 1983 Paddyfest step
dancing competition held March 13.

Rave reviews greeted the opening of the
Lucknow Agricultural's Society's production
of the play, Everybody's Getting Married.
The play was performed in several area
communities to enthusiastic audiences.
The Lucknow District Kinsmen club
designed a new community ball park as their
Jamboree 83 project. The site for the ball
park was purchased by the Village of
Lucknow from Anderson Flax Products for
$2
Huron County Council went on record in
opposition to the Ministry of Agriculture's
proposed 100 per cent rebate on farm land
tax.
Victor and Valetta Emerson of White-
church were guests of honour at an open
house to celebrate their 90th and 85th
birthdays respectively.
Carroll McKim R.N. of Lucknow particip-
ated in a short term mission to Honduras,
sponsored by the Medical Group Missions
program of the Christian Medical Society.
Carroll was part of a team of physicians.
surgeons. dentists, nurses, para -medical
and general support personnel who conduct-
ed a general medical, surgical and dental
program. The medical personnel participat-
ing in the program paid all their own
expenses and contributed medical supplies
to help supplement those purchased by the
program.
The Royal Bank of Canada announced it
would close its Lucknow branch on July 8
because the branch was not a profitable
operation.
Grace Farrish of Lucknow celebrated her
90th birthday at an open house attended by
relatives and friends on April 9.
William F. MacDonald of Lucknow cele-
brated his 95th birthday on March 17.
A fire destroyed the dairy barn, milking
parlour and straw sheds on the farm of J. C.
Drennan. Ashfield Township.
Lucknow Village Council passed a proper-
ty standards by-law which permits council to
fine a. property owner who refuses to clean
up is property as requested.
Bruce County Board of Education approv-
ed a motion to cease operation of the
secondary school at Ripley District School.
The decision concluded three months of
debate on what should happen with the
village's secondary school. A decline in
enrollment was cited as the reason. The
school building will be used as an element-
ary school in conjunction with Ripley Huron
Central School also locted in the village.
Agricultural Minister Dennis Timbrell.._
attended an open meeting of farmers in
Lucknow and assured farmers his proposed
farm tax rebate program would not take
away their property rights. Timbrell also
answered questions concerning high interest
rates and the consequences for farmers of
the interest rate policy as well as a proposed
program for beginning farmers. Timbrell
indicated the beginning farmers program
would be announced in May.

William R. Hunter was appointed Luck-
now's first recreation director, a position he
had held unofficially for several years.
Hunter will act as director of recreational
programs, arena manager and swimming
pool supervisor for the municipalities of
Ashfield, West Wawanosh and Kinloss
Townships and the village of Lucknow.
Lucknow Village Council was forced to
withdraw their application for approval of
the village's sewage works proposal current-
ly before the Ontario Municipal Board.

option to purchase the land for the treatment

renew the option because of differences with
