Memorable
Christmas
Two Sentinel readers submitted stories
and poems about Christmas for our special
Christmas edition this year. Gertrude Leddy
wrote about her most memorable Christmas
and Donalda Moffat contributed three of her
poems about the Christmas season and the
land of Israel. We appreciate the participa-
tion of these readers and wish all our readers
a very Merry Christmas and peace in the
New Year.
Christmas concerts
Several area schools held Christmas
concerts over the past week, Our Sentinel
reporter attended concerts at Brookside
Public School, Kinloss Central School and
Lucknow Christian School. We regret that
the children in the pictures at the Lucknow
Christian School concert could not be
identified because their concert was held
Friday night and the children and teachers
are enjoying their Christmas vacation this
week.
Redtrees
The column, Redtrees has been unavail-
able for the past three weeks due to a
complication because the author Don
Campbell is currently living in Spain.
Redtrees will resume with the next week's
edition of The Sentinel.
Government does not respond to farmers: OFA
The lack of government responsiveness to
the needs of Ontario fanners was the
common message expressed by delegates to
the 47th annual convention of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture (OFA).
Many of the delegates gave examples of
suffering and desperation among hard
pressed producers from across the province.
OFA president Ralph Barrie summed up the
frustration when he said "Neither the
federal or provincial governments are
providing adequate or timely answers to the
critical questions facing us,"
Barrie added that while the general
economy continues to invprove, the farm
economy is still stagnating. input costs are
rising and many commodity prices are
dropping. leading to severe financial hard-
ship for many years.
Referring to meetings with government..
Barrie said their response is "There's no
free lunch."
"That's just not true. By selling livestock
below the cost of production, beef and pork
producers are providing thousands of free
lunches every day for Canadian consum-
ers," he said.
Barrie called on government to provide a
"ladder of opportunity" for the agricultural
community to climb to more prosperous
times, as well as "safety nets" for those
producers who are in trouble.
Joy and
blessings to
all, as we
celebrate this
- very special
season.
The ladder of opportunity should include a
well preserved land base, a healthy farm
supply sector, stable and secure pricing. a
well developed wholesale and retail sector,
and government policies that provide incen-
tives and stability to farming. Barrie also
stressed the need for a well educated society
in regard to modern agricultural practices
and the development of more effective farm
organizations.
Delegates to the convention also approved
the majority of recommendations in a report
on ways to increase the effectiveness of the
Federation. The report dealt with structure,
finances, lobbying, communicatins and
on-going service development. A recommen-
