The board made the decision at its December 5 meeting, but not all trustees agreed. Trustee John Jewitt said that m the past he has had similar requests for school buses to pick up students at their driveway, but because of board policy he hadn't brought the requests to the board. Busing policy allows elementary students to walk up to a quarter of a mile to catch the school bus and secondary students can walk up to a half mile. Mt. Jewitt wondered aloud if he should present to the board a list of people who have come to him with similar requests. 1n the past he has informed those making such requests of the board's policy. !,Management committee chairman Murray Mulvey defended his committee's recome- mendation by stating that the bus would only be going the extra distance for three winter months. from December to March. He added than because of re-routing which won't affect other students, the bus will not have to turn around on the roadway. At its November meeting, the board heard from the mother of the child, Mrs. A. Meader of Pori Albert, requesting that het daughter be picked up at the driveway during the winter months because snow banks and winds off Lake Huron present safety hazards to the child walking to catch the bus. "My concern is that we are deviating from policy, Everybody feels they have special circumstances. I'm quite prepared to take the heat from individuals and prepared to tell them we operate within the guidelines. Now we're getting away from guidelines. 1'd hate to put any child in jeopardy, but 1 can't see that we are," said Mt. Jewitt, Trustee John Elliott agreed noting that to him it seems than if a special presentation is made the management committee, guidelin- es can be altered. Board • vice-chairman Eugene Frayne emphasized that the arrangement is only for three months and "no promises" were made to make similar arrangements next year. "Probably in the future we will have to look at safety on an individuai basis," said Mr. Frayne.
