HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1983-11-30, Page 11church news Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, November 30, 1983—Page 11 Presbytery meets at Lucknow United church At Lucknow United Church, Lucknow, representatives of Bruce Presbytery of the United Church of Canada met to report, listen, decide and work on the challenges of the church, Each congregation was encour- aged to, in a positive and deliberate way, plan an event promoting peace in our homes, community, churches and world this Christ- mas, Dorothy King, Chesley and Rev. C. MacMillan, Harriston, guided throught the different phases they experienced at the Strategy's For Peace and Security Confer- ence recently in Guelph. They gave us an understanding of this very emotional subject. Much discussion erupted during the budget session. Financial support was made to the 1984 International Ploughing Match at Harriston where the United Church of Canada will portray the work of the church in the tented city, Planning by the Bruce Youth Committee was encouraged by a financial sum, Rev, Bob Stokes, Pine River, introduced a Constitution of the Bruce Presbytery Lay Foundation of the United Church of Canada. This document explains the purpose to en- courage persons to devote their lives and talents to the Christian ministry and other church vocations. Also to render financial assistance to such people, and to challenge all church members to accept their respon- sibility to consider the possibility of a call to full time Christian service within the church. This Constitution was accepted and a Board of Directors will meet soon, "Love Your Enemies" was the theme of worship by Rev, Norman Perry, Kincardine, Ventures in Mission is the program initiated to raise money and to educate the members of each congregation as a whole about the needs of the church, Some of the needs are pre -1955 Pension Plan, new church development and church redevelop- ment, Paul Pick, Kincardine, reported that several phases are now completed. Volun- teers have been recruited and trained to faacilitate the flow of information and to guide congregations. Miss Dorcas Larson, Paisley, reported on Confessing Our Faith conference held at Five Oaks Christian Workers Centre, Paris, Ontario, She emphasized confessing our faith in our daily decisions and to affirm the work of the "United Church Men" in our congregations, organized or not. Chairman of the Mental Health Associa- tion for Grey -Bruce, Dr. Doug Brydon, Southampton, outlined the work of this organization and affirmed the wilting of author Oiselle Ireland in the book, "The Fkrmer. Takes A Wife", a study by concerned farm women. The members of Bruce Presbytery discus- sed the challenge of working with a non-Christian community. They recommen- ded that Ministerial Associations encourage their local municipal councils to investigate their by-laws regarding the operation hours of the recreational facilities, parks and arenas on Sundays. They also recommended to the churches the use of Sunday afternoons and evenings as opportunities for supporting family activities. Some of the problems arising in the pastoral charges when ministers move were discussed in dialogue by Rev, Les McSpad- den, Hamilton Conference Personell Officer', and Rev. Meg Donst, Paisley. Other reports received were about Help - Line; Diaconal Ministers; "Contact", the Hamilton Conference insert in the Observer magazine; Loaves &r Fishes seminar; Youth and Adult Dialogue conference; Bruce Youth Committee; Christian Development and Communication; Congregational Life; Unit- ed Church Women and World Mission. Ashfield WMS discuss Luthers teachings The Ashfield W .M , S, meeting was held on November 17 at the home of Mrs, Warren Wylde. The meeting opened with the group repeating in unison the first verse of the hymn, A Safe Stronghold, written by Martin Luther, . Mrs, Stuart MacLennan gave the devo- tions with scripture readings, She told of the life of Martin Luther and How some of his teachings sawn still help its today, Mrs, Ken MacLennan gave some highlights from the Glad Tidings and read a piece by Marjorie Holmes saying we must keep some of the innocence of childhood, Mrs, Hugh Nugent capably handled the Study Book for this month, A choral reading was read by the group, Mag', Nugent showed a film on the life of missionary John Geddes and his wife, whose mission field was the Pacific Islands, She also told of some of the concerns and aims of the Pacific Conference of Churches, Roll call was answered by telling of an interesting article in the Presbyterian Record. The offering was received with the offertory prayer given by Mrs. Ken MacLennan. Mrs, Henry MacKenzie conducted the business, Mrs. Stuart MacLennan closed the meeting with a prayer of Remembrance and lunch was served.
