Farmers cannot compete against the
treasury of other provinces which provide
provincial support for their farmers.
Peckman said the recent report from the
auditor general shows that other ministeries
are very wasteful yet the agricultural
ministry cannot get money,
Clete dalton of the Farm Survival
Association pointed out that agriculture is
Canada's primary Industry and every other
industry in the country is secondary, based
on agriculture, Dalton said if agriculture is
doing well so is everyone else, Yet he
commented, the federal budget allows only
one per cent of the total budget for
agriculture,
Tony McQuail of the Huron County feder-
ation of agriculture, told Young the major
issues facing farmers within the near future
are the cost of financing and pries for
products, The uncertainty entering the
business is discouraging and the recent
experience with FCC is disheartening,
Federal finance minister Marc Lalonde was
too slow in allowing access to public money
to fund FCC and interest rates rose one per
ccnt in the meantime, said Quail.
FCC should be allowed to become more
competitive with banks, rather than picking
up the bad leans, said McQuail, banks
aren't interested in the farm lending field,
McQuai1 added, and FCC could be more
competitive if it could finance through asci.
bonds, Retiring farmers would like to invest
in the future of the industry through agr#=
bonds, he added,
Members of the Concerned Farm Women
also spoke to the meeting outlining concerns
regarding comntodity prices, the so-called
cheap food policy and a written statement
which considered the Crow's Nest Pass
Rate, They also gave Young a copy of 'The
Farmer Takes a Wife", which includes
survey results on the fatm familyand stress,
1n his comments followingte presenta-
tions, Young said the NHis addressing
farm issues in the House of Commons. Ne
cited the need for a comprehensive income
itisurancli program which had not been
addressed in the briefs presented.
Young said that organitratinns who wish to
present their eottcerns to goveriment should
lobby their own member of parliament,
