The Lucknow Sentinel, 1983-08-31, Page 9entertainment Tomorrow Box never boring BY JOANNE 11['CFIANAN I have seen The Toniurrow Box at the Blyth Summer Festival a total of three tittles now and haven't been bored yet. I could see this excellent production three more tithes and still love it ! 1 first saw The Tomorrow Box when the Festival staged it in 1981. 1 went to review it for the newspaper and enjoyed it so much that 1 went back a second time strictly for pleasure, taking a friend whom 1 also knew would like it. The Tomorrow Box is that kind of a play–the kind you want to share with friends. It is theatre at its best. Written by Anne Chislett ( better know as Anne Hoy, wife of the Festival's founding artistic director James Roy is The Tomorrow Box is back this year on the Festival stage by popular demand and indications are that it will play to sold -out audiences once again. Aside from the skillful writing by Chislett ( also the author of the award-winning Quiet in the (,and), much of the success of the play is due to the amazing Anne Anglin who portrays the central character of Maureen Cooper, a 60 -year-old farm wife who is stunned into independence after her domineering husband of 40 years tries to sell their home out from wider her with the idea of retiring to Florida. Without even being con- sulted about the decision, Maureen is being asked to give up her friends and dubs and Royal Boulton figurines by a husband who sees her not as individual but simply as 'the wife', or an extension of himself. M Maureen begins to stand up for her rights, she gets spontaneous bursts of applause and cheers from the audience. It is quite obvious that a kit of women can identify with her. Anglin is backed up by a strong supporting cast. bean Hawes plays her boorish male chauvinistic husband, Jack Cooper and, Archie Bunker has nothing on him But, in the end, he softens as his male pride is humbled. Anglin and Hawes were both in the 1981roduction of The Tomorrow Box as well. Pierre Tetrault plays Joe Cooper, the couple's newly - married sort who plans to take over their farm. Although protective of his mother, he tries to placate his farther by getting her to go along with his plan whether they are right for her or not. Deborah Grover and Nancy Reatty (who both also play in the Festival's production of The Innocent and the Just Y round out the cast. (rover portrays Joe's wife Mice who, while studying for her bar -examinations, lets household duties slide with the contention that Joe can do them just as well as she ('an. A much mote modern wife than Maureen' Alice's liberated views are somewhat softened by her love for .he but her older sister Lisa (played by Fealty ), arfso a lawyer, is a full-fledged feminist with a somewhat harsher edge The set. designed by Tony Abrams, is a ciyt away of a trailer. the temporary home of .Ire and Ah('p Action takes place faith ,nsrde and outside thy trailer and as .a; 1: i usual, the set is detailed and effective (ice, Anglin herself even got caught tip in the hilarity. It reminded nee of a Carol Burnett sketch but Anglin regained her coni. poSUI'e at bit more quickly than Burnett ever Could. The Tomorrow Box is the best theatre 1've seen all year, Take uii word fur it and didn't miss it' It will play in repertur\ at 11) th until September 14 and will then tour Suuthwesta rn Ontario Iuttil October 1. kinlough news Murray's enjoy working at store Hy May Hoyle Mr. and Mrs. W.
