ripley news Geese enjoy handouts *from page 14 Walking stick On Monday morning Johnny Smith had in a glass jar for identification. It was a walking stick. It was not the ordinary "run of the mill" stick used for walking, not even a fancy cane. It was an insect called a walking stick — looks like a 3 to 4 inch long twig. It used to be en- countered when picking wild raspberries out in the bush. We had not seen one in a couple of years then in the last week this was the second one. John's wife, Alta had picked it up at their home on the 8th concession east. The first one which wesaw was last Tuesday noon when this queer twig was climbing around on the steering wheel of our car. More on the Canada Geese Those Canada geese pic- tured in the newspaper last week being fed by folks at Kincardine Beach were first reported by Mrs. Adeline Martyn of Ripley on Satur- day morning, July 30. At that time, she said her daughter Bernice and hus- band Rod MacLennan of Toronto were feeding them pieces of bread in front of her cottage at Bruce Beach between the 8th and 10th con- cessions. A week later Adeline again reported that this same flock of 31 birds was taking a coffee break swim at ten each morning along Bruce Beach accep- ting handouts. This shows that there are many people who admire these graceful birds alive. Calvin McConnell just north of Artnow, first in- troduced these Maxima Canada geese a number of years ago. Ab Wylds, on talk- ing to his son, Mark McCon- nell, was told that there is now a neighbouring flock of thirty some birds in the area in addition to the McCon- nell's. Mark was also telling us about the flock of mallard ducks on a pond on the Fred Tout farm also in the Armow vicinity and the Fred takes great interest in them. + ++ George and Joy McLean attended the wedding recep- tion for Nelson Hellyer in Chatsworth last Saturday evening. Nelson is a cousin of George McLean. Also at- tending this reception were Mary Lynn, Wayne, and Mrs. Donalda McLean. + ++ Mike and Lois Kelly, daughters Christen ana Kathleen of Stratford recent- ly moved into the Allan Mackay house at the corner of Jessie and Ripley streets across from the Ripley post office. + ++ Mrs. Annie (Joe) Scott of Ripley entered Kincardine and District Hospital for treatment last Sunday. Mrs. Elizabeth Fair is back from hospital in London and is now in Kincardine Hospital. Also in Kincardine is Redvers Johnson. In Univer- sity Hospital in London since July 22 is Mervin Funston of Pine River where he has undergone two operations on his knees in the past three weeks. JOHN J. MCLEAN On Tuesday afternoon of last week the funeral service for John J. McLean of Lon- don was held at the James Harris Funeral Home on Act protects farmers •from page 8 inspector will make arrange- ments to have stored grain transferred to another facil- ity," said Timbrell. The act clarifies storage agreements and sales trans- actions by requiring an elev- ator operator to issue three separate forms. When the product is deliv- ered, the producer will be issued a weigh ticket as a receipt for the amount deliv- ered. A grain storage receipt indicates that the material is at the elevator for storage and remains the farmer's property. It must be in the farmer's hands within 30 days of delivery or sooner, if requested. A separate sales agreement form must be is- sued when products are sold to the elevator operator. Under the new legislation, every commercial grain stor- age elevator operator must hold a licence and must carry insurance for the full market value of the produce stored. The operator must inform the chief inspector of changes in banking arrangements or c JOBS s artners in the operation. Failure to do so may result in refusal or suspension of the licence. "The amendments to the act were made to reflect the wishes of the producer mark- eting baords, the chief in- spector and the ministry of consultation with the Ontario Grain and Feed Dealers' Association," said Timbrell "New regulations are be ing prepared by ministry officials to implement the new act. Once the draft regulations have been pre pared. we will consult with producer and dealer organ- izations before putting them in final form." More information about changes to the act is avail- able from Bill Taylor, Chief Inspector, Department of Crop Science, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario NIG 2W1, or John McMur- chy, Farm Products Market- ing Branch, Ministry of Agri- culture and Food, Queens Park, Toronto, Ontario M7A I AS.
