While it seems most young people move from the country to the city once they start looking for jobs, these city -bred workers are reversing the trend, and have got jobs in the country. They are Junior Agriculturalists, or Junior Aggies for short, and this year there are four students being hosted in the Lucknow area. Lori Bennett, 18, working on the farm of Marinus Miltenburg at R. 7, Lucknow, found out about the program at school and applied for it because she wanted some farm experience. For years now, Lori has wanted to be a Veterinarian. But she comes from Toronto, and has never been able to get the farm experience she knows will be helpful for her to get into vet school, and later on when she starts working. She was ecstatic, then, when she found out she was accepted as a Junior Aggie. And now, as the nine week program is drawing to a close, she says she has really liked the experience. Paul Hastings has been living on the farm ()floe Van Osch, R. 3, Lucknow, for the past nine weeks. It is also his first experience with farm life, and he has also enjoyed the summer, Paul is from Kitchener, He has been working part-time as a busboy in a rest- aurant, but he says this is `totally different, "You don't have to worry about being dirty on a farm," he says. More seriously he adds, "The work is harder, but a little more enjoyable and a lot more interesting," Paul also heard of the program through school, and applied for it along with a couple of other Experience '83 programs, spon- sored by the Ontario government. He was happy to get this job, though he says he was a little wary, because he had no idea what it wet Id be like. "1 was wondering what did 1 get myself into?" ilu' after a week or so of getting used to livin, with strangers, the hard work and the long hours, both Paul and Lori felt right at home on their hosts' farm, and felt as if they were :r .e of the family, Both students have been working on dairy farms, and that means getting up early in the morning to start chores, and to help with the milking, Neither seemed to mind, though. Lori has extensive babysitting ex- perience, and she's used to getting up early because with children you have to work long hours. And Paul? "I'm usually the first one up," he says. He's also one of the first ones to bed. He's been invited to go nut with the Van Osch sons, aged 15 and 17, but he says, "I'm usually too tired to go out at night." He does not see how they can sometimes come home well past midnight and still get up at 6.30 to go out to the barn. The Van Osch family have had Junior Agriculturalists before, and Joe Van Osch says they have always worked out really Turn to page 16.
