LUNCH BOOM AUCTIONEERS: WALLACE BALLAGH, TEESWATER 392.6170 crud GRANT *DONALD, RIPLEY 395-5353 Lueknow Sentinel, Wednesday, August 17, 1983—Page 18 Rabies clinics will vaccinate pets for free Dog and cat owners in Huron County should take advantage of free anti -rabies vaccination clinics through- out the county starting Sept- ember 12 to help control the problem in the area, says Dr. W. 3. Thompson, the Food Production and Inspection Branch of Agriculture Can- ada in Seaforth, Since January this year, there have been 54 confirm- ed cases of rabies, a virus disease which has been a problem in Huron since the mid yds. Spread from one animal to another or to a human by biting or contact of saliva with a break in the skin, rabies is usually fatal in all warm-blooded species. Since dogs and cats are in closest contact with humans, it's important to have pets vaccinated, say Dr. Thomp- son, If bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid animal, a person should first wash the wound with soap and water, being careful to shield the eyes, nose and mouth from reflected spray, apply an antiseptic and call a doctor, The local medical officer of health should also be inform- ed so the animal can be found. Five vaccine innoculations over a period of a month are given to anyone bitten or scratched by an animal known as suspected to be rabid, Tips to avoid rabids in- clude yearly vaccinations for pets, caution with stray or wild animals, keeping pets from roaming free and avoid- ing contact with dead ani- mals, Clinics will be held in Seaforth on October 4 from 2 pan, to 8 p.m. at the community centre, in Brus- sels on September 20 from 3 p, m, to 8 p, m. at the fire hall, and in Hensall on September 27 from 4 p, m. to 8 p.m, at the community centre.
