She has been to Norway, England, several European countries and is present- ly spending a month in Canada on the Lions International Exchange. One of 50 young people from eleven countries, Marjukka is staying with Grant and Wilma Chisholm of Lucknow, her host family. Canadians are friendly, outgoing people, she says, like the people she has met in the other countries she has visited. "People in the different countries are the same but their lifestyles are different," she observes. Marjukka spent over two months in England on an English immersion program sponsored by the Finnish government, working for an English family caring for their children. When in Norway she worked in a factory and she spent two weeks working with handicapped adults in Greece. She plans to take fashion design and fabric deign at a university if she is accepted this fall. She has already completed one year of art college. If she is not accepted in design, Marjukka will take art history and teach art. Twenty years old, she prefers to live in the countryside and enjoys reading, handi- crafts, movies, theatre, art, swimming and cycling. The oldest of a family of three girls, Marjukka lives with her parents in Utajarvi, a town of 3,500 people, 800 kilometres north Helsinki. Her mother is a bank official and her father is a graduated forester. Forestry is a major industry in Finland, producing wood products, lumber, pulp and paper. A unique aspect of their agricultural industry is reindeer farming. Filet of reindeer and pork is a common entree on restaurant menus served with curry sauce with onions and celery; deep fried potato wedges; stewed broccoli and a summer salad with French bread. Finland's vast southern wilderness is a popular tourist attraction featuring lakes, rivers and river valleys where people enjoy camping, boating and hiking. Pietarasaari, a town with expanding industry and trade, is nevertheless popular among tourists for its sandy beaches on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. Kalajoki sand dunes are another tourist spot which has developed into a many sided holiday centre close to nature. The sandy beach is surrounded by grand pine forests and wide blue sea. Situated near the same latitude as our Northwest Territories, Finland has five months of snow and only two hours of daylight in the winter months. In the north of Finland, there are 52 days without any daylight in the winter season. In summer there is no darkness for the months of June and July and the temperatures range between 25 - 30 degrees Celsius. While in Canada Marjukka attended the Youth Camp for Lions exchange visitors where she met the other young people staying with host families in Lions Districts A-9 and A-15. The countries represented at the camp included United States, Austria, West Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, Japan, Israel, France, Italy and Switzer- land. At the camp held at Wildwood Conser- vation Area near St. Marys, Marjukka made new friends and learned about other cultures. She also got a chance to try out the languages she speaks, Finnish, Eng- lish, Swedish and a bit of German. While at camp, activities included sports, a hayride, roller skating, swimming and dancing and trips to see Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, the Ontario Science Centre and Ontario Place. Just prior to leaving for home several of the visitors staying in this immediate area enjoyed an afternoon together in Mildmay and on Friday, Marjukka toured the Art Gallery in Toronto before catching a flight for home. ifs _. .may. ;tel,,: Natzpamismsaw • Open road grader tenders The August session of West Wawanosh Township Council took place on Tues- day evening, August 2, 1983, in the Municipal Office.
