Firemen respond
To the editor:
The members and the executive of the Lucknow District
Fire Department held a meeting recently to discuss some
of the comments in the article appearing in the July 20th
edition of the Lucknow Sentinel.
'Since the installation of the pager system, all
emergency calls are handled at the Pinecrest Manor
Nursing Home where staff IS available twenty-four hours
a day and are doing a very commendable job. The article
states that for a recent alarm the fire phone rang five
times making it apear that the staff was slow in respon-
ding. Five rings constitutes a period of twenty seconds,
which in the opinion of the firemen is a reasonable time to
answer a call particularly since under the old system the
fire phones often rang as often as ten times. It is
questionable if these phones were manned at all times.
The female voice that Mr. Murray heard was the Chief's
wife relaying orders from the Chief and there are no "—"
in the tape on the automatic recorder at the fire hall.
The sounding of the siren is an internal problem of the
Fire Department. At the installation of the new system
many of the Firemen felt that the use of pagers only
should be tried for an indefinite period after which this
method would be reviewed and has been reviewed.
The speed of firemen driving to the fire hall in response
to an alarm is up to the individual fireman and is not
controlled by the Department.
The van does not require a specially licenced driver. All
firemen are experienced motor vehicle drivers.
The purchase of seat belts for the van has already been
discussed at a recent meeting of the Department.
The Lucknow District Fire Department is willing to
consider beneficial suggestions from the Area Fire Board.
The relationship between the Fire Department and the
Area Board has always been excellent.
