renovations permitted the space for physio-
therapy and laboratory departments to
double and the rehabilitation unit to be
moved into the main hospital from a portable
building in the yard. People who have come
through these areas as patients have no
problem seeing the improvements, she says,
but many who have not used the hospital
since the work was done, do not realize the
extend of the changes.
The survey also found people tend to
question the necessity of all public sector
spending as a result of the current economic
slump. The survey adds however, if the
board can prove the new wing is necessary
and urgent, it will get the required financial
support from the community.
The board is happy with the survey
Discuss fire siren issue...

the speed limit will kill somebody. The risk
of such an accident increases if the siren is
not turned on because the public is not
aware there is a fire.
Murray said firemen answering a call are
not outside the law and should not be
travelling at speeds beyond the speed limit,
whether driving their own vehicles to the
firehall or while travelling in the fire trucks
to the scene. Murray said he took one ride to
a fire in the department's emergency van
and he will never ride to a fire in that
"suicide wagon" again. The van is not
equipped with seatbelts for the passengers
and the drivers of the van are driving too fast
and they are inexperienced, Murray said.
Murray allowed that firemen do drive
faster than the speed limit permits but
within reason. Ten miles over the speed limit
is one thing, said Murray, but 20 or 30 miles
over the limit is another.
Murray commented the Lucknow Fire
Department is a good department and it's
too bad a controversy is dividing the men.
Murray said it's a good department and
George Whitby is a good fire chief and it's
time the issue was resolved.
Murray said he would understand the fire
bo•:rd to have the authority to make the
decision concerning the siren. It shouldn't
be left to one man, he suggested.
Murray said he will be resigning from the
department as of the next fire meeting. He
said he volunteered for the job and he can
"unvolunteer" .
Bomb blast...

responsibility for the blast was one of three
groups that took responsibility for the
assassination of a Turkish diplomat in
Brussels July 14. The Armenian terrorists
claim Turks massacred thousands of Armen-
ians at the turn of the century. A Turkish
diplomat was assassinated in Ottawa a year
ago by Armenian terrorists.
Four of the dead in the explosion at the
airport were Turkish nationals and one was a
French bystander.

finding that the hospital has been meeting
local health needs, Vair says, but is
concerned it may have failed to provide
proper information about the previous
building project.
Board members are solidly behind the
initial project, she says, and forming the
committee is an attempt to provide answers
to any questions the public may have.
For example, she notes, some people have
asked why the hospital did not combine the
two projects adding the emergency and
outpatient wing at•the same time it did the
other renovations. This was impossible
explains the board chairman, because there
is a very long waiting list for Health Ministry
funding of major capital projects. By
splitting the work into two smaller projects,
the hospital was able to get quicker approval
from the ministry.
The current project, which would add a
single storey wing to the south end of the
hospital for expanded emergency and out-
patient departments and permit expansion
of the X-ray department within the existing
building, is still on the drawing board. To
date, the hospital has received ministry

approval of its preliminary drawings and the
architect is at work on the working drawings,
Vair reports. Once they have been approved,
the project can go to tender.
The total cost of the project is estimated
about $1.4 million, of which the board hopes
to raise a substantial portion locally. No firm
target for the fund raising campaign has yet
been set, but figures have been mentioned
ranging between $300,000 and $600,000.
The Health Ministry has agreed to provide
$250,000, with additional grants to come
from Huron and Bruce counties, and the
hospital will make up the balance from its
own capital reserves.
So far the board has not set a target date
for either the kickoff of the fund raising
campaign or the sod turning for the new
wing, but says Vair it hopes to tie the two
events together and is considering dates
sometime in the fall.
