Then backward look on days of yore, Of faces then, now see no more, That was and still our hearts delight, All vanished from our fading sight, Which still entrance the wandering mind, And modern view that leave behind. As we look on the days now gone, When trees the eagles built upon, And there had heard their offspring cry, Which that bewildered human eye, iOn pines' high tip would feed and rest, :Secure from roan and prowling beast. Flowers grew on the hill and swamp, Where that the soil was rich and damp. Delight of heart, and eye as well, Their odour sweet, yet think can smell. Bright columbine, and the monkshood, Through swamp conspicuous ever stood, Of jessamine, and ivy find, ,Around the trees their tendrils bind, The lady -slipper and the fern, In clusters grew around the burn, And many others blooming nice, In Nature's home, a Paradise. Then cheerful was the heart and mind, When that with Nature we combined, Gay birds then sang above our head, Went flitting round earth's flower bed; That spread o'er land of dazzling hue, Then tall and thick in summer grew, Inspiring sight, then did behold, Delight of youth, in days of old. Alas! no more the eye can see, Sweet Nature's bloom beneath the tree, All, all are gone now ever more, And soon we too must cross the shore, While flowers grow and ever bloom, When that we lie beneath the tomb. Of what a change in fifty years, From wilderness a town appears. In which the bear and wolf had seats, In Lucknow's now livebusiness streets, With window stores of the plate glass, Attract the people as they pass. The sight delight when going by, Inducement of the goods to buy, Of carpets, silks or calico, That's all for sale a mammoth show, On tables spread of red and blue, Of stacks that's in the window too, While that on shelves there is a sight, The young and old that still delight. In garments rich of fur and lace; To clothe the back or shade the face, And style admire by all who see, No matter what their taste may be, Through palace stores can ready find. What suit the pocket and the mind; Of grocers' shops there's many here, Where fruit and pastry that appear, And sweets of every kind can meet, When going on the public street, Enchant the young and also old. Where candy, cake and buns are sold. The hungry may not dread or fear, A relished dish can find it there. With boots and shoes the shops are full, As leather goods are never dull, The style is new, of modern cut, In kid and calf, the latest out, Of kind the king had recent worn, And that for children just been born. At Little's look, or Joe Agnew's, And see their dainty shining shoes, For farmer and the merchant kind, That fit the feet and please the mind, A rush go there now every day, The shoes to get that wear and stay. Of what a change now people see, A business town where grown the tree, Where bear and wolf once had their lair, On streets now paved and level there, With granolithic on each side, Where babe in carriage daily ride. The buildings too of brick and stone, With coloured glass to shade the sun, And churches with their towers high, That's reaching up unto the sky, On Sabbath hear the tolling bell, The saint and sinner bring to kneel. Of late design, the structures grand, Compare with any in the land, And gospel's sound there hear it sway Where people go each Sabbath day, Turn to page 2210. 1925 CHEVROLET Congratulations To The People Of Lucknow On The Occasion Of Your 125th Birthday John Cullen Chev-Olds Ltd. 115 Josephine Ste Win ghatn 357-2323 Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, June 29, 1983—Page 21b welcome Home To Jamboree '83 And Best Wishes On Lucknow's 125th Birthday Congratulations to the Jamboree Cornniittee Elliotts Seed Mill & Trucking The Elliott Family Jamie, Merle, Ray and Noreen, Graeme Lucknow 528-3500 Con9zatufationl Eo Tiffa9E of J2ucInocu 002 cis. 125 ,4ol--l'LI( l's'Ji' S'c:74c.Rl/ o tct Mitt W00L LEA1FHER PR0DUCTS it, ihlkt 11 Where the values are THE ORIGINAL OLD MILL In Blyth SINCE 1894 Bainton Limited, (Blyth, Ont.)
