By village lot had got his pay.
A hotel built by Sutherland,
Where that the Royal Stately stand,
And Chester Chapman had a share
When first it was erected there.
To make a road the trees had fell,
From Goderich to the new hotel.
McKenzie Dan and brother John j
Then built where now McGarry's on.
Of three hotels had people drew,
To find which best had mountain dew,
While oxen would the jumper rush.
With bag or two from out the bush.
All oxen and no horses then,
Drove by the boys and aged men,
A score each day 'went to the mill,
With bag or sack that flour fill,
And no such sights now ever see,
Of ox or men at logging bee.
Then sleighs whuld jump and onward glide,
Round root of trees did ever slide.
First blacksmith shop, McLennan Hugh,
As neighbours, fond of mountain dew;
The next that come was Hugh Mackay,
To make horse shoes and mend the sleigh.
Of boot men first that did advance,
The one who came was Matthew Vance.
Then stores were built and houses too,
Mechanics come then quite a few,
MacKinnon and one tailor Kerr,
Who made the clothes the people wear,
The coarse, the fine, and also loose,
And all then pressed with Sandy's goose.
The cooper first and still alive,
One Geddes come to work and thrive,
And Lyons yet is living here,
In days of yore a pioneer.
While Mistress Campbell still is found,
Of mourning garments that surround,
And Proctor then the harness made,
The first for horses of the trade,
To shop at night oft went for fun,
To yarns hear that others spun.
Then Proctor's shop was the recourse,
For man as well as for the horse.
A tailor then, forgot his name,
Had lived there where Geddes came,
Of flowers deemed the fairest rose,
Until he stole Treleaven's clothes.
Then Johnstons and the Coxes too,
Of early days attent on drew,
Experts with axe and also gun,
Oft shot a deer while on the run.
With artist skill did Palmer work,
Here living still in great New York,
And pictures make for magazine,
That his delight had ever been.
Of rest here named, as far as known,
All are away, or dead and gone.
At the old shop stout Alex. Ross
Still garments making for the horse.
John Adams too, called "Happy Jock"
That no disease did ever shock.
In early days come to the bush,
With others that in glee would rush,
Yet hale and hearty go around,
On every street may still be found.
A racer once of some repute,
Of which I state none can dispute.
Goderich Poly, an athlete man,
A race for cash had with him ran,
When owing to the distance short,
Jock lost the money and the sport.
No land that own, or that possess,
And working at the printing press,
The office boys there know him well,
While grinding out the "Sentinel".
T. Lawrence that at Belfast lived,
In early days to Lucknow moved.
A spanking team those days had drove,
With the McCl.ary's famous stove.
McDonagh was the first tanner here,
Who of that trade did then appear,
When hides and money both were scarce,
For needful wants declined to press.
Here one Lougheed in days gone by,
With root and drug had made "Old Rye,"
Now he is dead, forever gone,
With the recipe he worked upon.
Old Philo White, an auctioneer,
Was bloated some by drinking beer,
Had drove the stage for many days,
A four -horse team of grey and bays,
From Goderich to the Lucknow House,
For years each day had run the course,
The man of tricks would ever shun,
