Sportsmen and fans keep Sepoy Town prominent
This brief chapter cannot
do justice to the sportsmen
and fans who through the
years have kept the Sepoy
Town prominently in the
spotlight. Their prowess on
the "athletic field" won for
this community the reputa-
tion of being a "great little
sporting town" and "The
Sepoys", as so many teams
were named, always proved
themselves as competitors to
be reckoned with, whatever
the game might be.
From feats of strength,
and skill of the ladies of the
Archery Club of Caledonian
Days, to the current success
in hockey and ball, sport has
always played an important
role in the life of the Village.
Lacrosse, the national
game, flourished here before
the turn of the century and in
the early 1890s the town
boasted a team that went
undefeated for, some say,
three seasons.
Baseball and hockey ev-
entually gained in popularity
until lacrosse passed from
the picture. In the last
decade or so baseball has
become almost extinct, as
floodlighting of ball parks
made softball a popular night
game. Fastball, for which
Lucknow imported Negro pit-
chers - notably Hughie Hall
and Charlie Justice - had its
fling and drew huge crowds,
but the cost of operating such
clubs became prohibitive.
Hockey and baseball have
waxed and waned in such
leagues as the Northern Lea-
gue, Lakeside League, Bruce
League, O.H.A., O.B.A.,
and latterly activity has been
entirely confined to the
W .O. A . A .. with Lucknow
having sent more than one
championship minor team
into the Ontario Minor Asso-
ciation 'playoffs.
Hockey reached it zenith
here for a time when the
Chin Brothers scintillated on
the ice. The performances of
the brother line of Bill,
Albert and George brought
widespread fame to Luck -
now.. and at one time the
threesom had a tryout with
the Toronto Maple Leafs.
They were followed by the
brother combination of Char-
Iie and Jack, while before
and after them, Morley and
Allan upheld the family tra-
dition of being "born hockey
