First Lucknow school was located in tannery
As the Village grew in size
and population there natural-
ly developed a need for
educational facilities. The
first Public School in Luck -
now was held in a building on
Campbell Street previously
used as a tannery. It was
situated where F. T. Arm-
strong at one time operated a
jewellery store which now
forms part of the former
Lloyd Ashton clothing store.
The only teacher we have
record of teaching in this
building was William Mid-
dleton.
The first Public School
building in Lucknow was
erected in 1862. It was of

frame construction, near the
site of the former Lucknow
Public School on Havelock
Street. Mr. Middleton was
the first teacher in this
school.
As the Village expanded
more teachers were requir-
ed. In 1870 the population of
Lucknow was 500. Six years
later it had grown to 1,500. In
1875 the staff had grown to
four. In 1897 the number of
pupils attending the school
was 295.
The former Lucknow Pub-
lic School on Havelock Street
was erected in 1878. The
erection of this new school
necessitated the issue of the
first debentures sold by the
Village Corporation.
The school board of 1889
succeeded in enlarging the
playgrounds by the purchase
of some property from the
Presbyterian Church.
About 1908 there was a
clear distinction made be-
tween Public and Continua-
tion School. Joseph Stalker,
who was appointed principal
in 1902 was principal of both.
Miss F. E. McLean became
his assistant in the Continua-
tion work while Miss Kate
McNab took charge of the
entrance class.
During the summer and
autumn of 1925 the school
was remodeled. From Sept-
ember until Christmas clas-
ses were held in vacant
buildings at scattered loca-
tions throughout the Village.
In January 1926, the classes
returned to a bright, modern
well equipped school.
In 1935 the Continuation
School became a High School
with Miss F. E. McLean as
principal and Miss K. Mac-
Donald became principal of
the Public School.
In June 1940 the Board
began making dental service
free to all pupils. In February
1944 the Board decided to
supply all pupils' require-
ments for school. Later text
books were also supplied
with the Board receiving a
special grant to help cover
the cost of text book and
library books.
During the summer of
1953 the High School moved
to their new building and
Second Room which for sev-
eral years previous to this
date, had been conducted in
the Recreational Centre
moved back to the Public
School building.
In September 1954 a Kin-
dergarten was opened under
the guidance of Isabel Mac-
Kenzie. In October 1955
greatly increased attendance
created the need of opening
another room in charge of
Mrs. Irwin Carruthers who
also acted as music super-
visor throughout the school.
In the later 1950s the
school supplied education
facilities for the pupils of
Grey Ox School, Paramount
School and Zion School which
were closed. Hot lunches
were served during the noon
