A. E. and Elizabeth McKim
active in Lucknow community
A business that served the
people of Lucknow and dist-
rict for many years was the
Rexall Drug Store that was
owned and operated by Mr.
A. E. McKim from 1921 to
1959.
Allan Emerson McKim
was born in North Walsing-
ham Township, Norfolk
County in 1889. He lived his
early life on the family farm
and attended Tillsonburg
High School. in 1911 he
graduated from the Ontario
College of Pharmacy, Uni-
versity of Toronto. Upon
graduation, he worked in
Edmonton, Alberta for sever-
al years and then returned to
Ontario and managed
pharmacies in Tillsonburg
and Wallaceburg. On June 9,
1918 he married Elizabeth
Reid in Tillsonburg.
In 1921, Mr. and Mrs.
McKim and daughter Mary
moved to Lucknow at which
time Mr. McKim purchased

the pharmacy on the main
street from Garnett Arm-
strong.
During his 38 years in
business, Mr. McKim was
active in many community
organizations. He and his
family were members of the
Lucknow United Church. He
served on the Lucknow High
School Board, the Library
Board and as secretary -treas-
urer of the Lucknow Pipe
Band. He was also a member
of the Royal Arch Masons
and a charter member of the
Lucknow District Lions Club.
He was always interested in
sports - tennis, curling and
lawn bowling.
In 1959, when he was 70,
Mr. McKim, sold his pharm-
acy to Mr. Elmer Umbach
who has operated it since
then.
Following the sale of his
pharmacy, Mr. McKim did
relief work at many drug
stores throughout Western
Ontario until he went into full
retirement at the age of 80.
When he turned 90, Mr.
McKim, hefped form and
was a charter member of the
Nonagenarian Club. He host-
ed two picnics for the Club at
his family cottage at Kintail.
Mr. McKim died on April
24, 1982. He was prede-
ceased by his wife, Eliza-
beth, in 1978.
Mr. McKim and his wife,
Elizabeth were active citiz-
ens in their community and
they were well known and
respected by all who knew
them.
Mrs. McKim was active in
many community organiza-
tions and activities. One of
her primary interests was the
Girl Guides and she or-
ganized the first Lucknow
Company in 1923, serving as
its captain for many years.
She was also District Com-
missioner and while serving
in this capacity, was awarded
the Medal of Merit for her
contribution to Guiding in
1945.
At the Provincial level, she
was Lone Commissioner and
International Commissioner.
She was instrumental in dev-
eloping the Doe Lake Camp
and locally, Camp Keeway-
din. In August of last year
the new Brownie House at
Camp Keewaydin was nam-
ed in her honour.
In 1958 she was awarded
the "Beaver", for her out-
standing service to the Girl
Guide movement.
Mrs. McKim was also ac-
tive in the Red Cross, Luck -
now United Church Women
and The Town and Country
Club. An enthusiastic stamp
collector, she interested
many young people in this
hobby and exchanged
stamps with philetatlists in
many parts of the world.
A great believer in keeping
a youthful outlook, she took
up skiing in her 77th year
when the Lucknow Ski Club
was formed. She was an avid
skater and was a familiar
face around the Lucknow
Arena during the Mother and
Tots Wednesday afternoon
sessions. She participated in
the Kinsmen skateathon
when she was 84, skating for
an hour.
Born in Tillsonburg on
January 29, 1892, she was
the daughter of the late Dr.
J. B. Reid of Orangeville and
the late May Spence Reid of
Donegal, Ireland.
