THOMAS WEBSTER
In the sowing and garnering of the
grain crops of Bruce and Huron
Counties, 'a considerable if indirect part
is taken by the subject of this sketch.
The farmer sows the seed, nature giveth
the increase, but Thomas Webster
supplies (in part) the implements of
husbandry.
Fifty two years ago, Mr. Webster was
born, just outside the village of Luck -
now. In 1894 he began business as a
dealer in implements and machinery, in
partnership with W. G. Andrew, repre-
senting then the Frost and Wood line of
Harvesting Machinery. Ten years later,
that connection was severed; Mr. Web-
ster took over the agency for the Massey
Harris Co., and started on an independ-
ent basis. This business has grown
under his care to very large proportions,
sales for the year 1909 alone were
around the ten thousand dollar mark. it
is Mr. Webster's humorous boast that
he can supply you with anything (in his
line) between a Sewing Machine needle
and a Threshing Machine; between a
Jew's Harp and a Modern Grand Piano.
W. G. ANDREW
"Geordie" Andrew is an Ashfield
boy, having been born on the 12th
concession of that Township, not very
many years ago. When eighteen years
of age he qualified•. as a school teacher,
and was later for one year in charge of
the school at Holyrood. Salaries in those
days were not such as tended to make
their recipients unduly wealthy; and in
1893 Mr. Andrew removed to Lucknow,
definitely abandoning the drilling of
pupils for the selling of drills. In other
words, Mr. Andrew began business
here as an implement agent and dealer
in Musical Instruments. His business
has grown and prospered in a satis-
factory manner. He represents the
Deering line of Harvesting Machinery,
and this year alone sold five car loads of
it. He handles also, Cockshutt and
Wilkinson plows; Tudhope, and Wm.
Doer's carriages; Doherty Organs;
Heinztman Pianos; New Williams Sew-
ing Machines; Timothy and Clover
Seed; and various )ther lines of agri-
cultural requiremcn,s.
