John Joynt was reeve of the village from 1909 - 1910 and again in 1915. His son, J. W. Joynt was reeve from 1943-47 during which time he served as Bruce County warden in 1947. His son, George W. Joynt was elected reeve in 1957 and has served continuously since that time except for one term of office in REEVE JOHN JOYNT Happy Birthday To Our Neighbours In Lucknow HOLIDAY WORLD June Alton and Marg Burkhart Wingham 357-2701 Best Wishes to our neighbours in Lucknow on your 125th Anniversary George Smyth Welding R. 2 Auburn 29-7212 1969. Keeping it in the family, a son-in-law of John Joynt and George's uncle served as reeve for nine years. Robert Johnston was reeve from 1917 - 1926 and Bruce County warden in 1921. He was married to J. W. Joynt's sister, Mamie. A biographical sketch of John Joynt appeared in the 1910 special edition of the Lucknow Sentinel which heralded the revival of the Caledonian Games and it best describes this "true blooded son of the Emerald Isle". In the career of the present Chief Magistrate of the village of Lucknow, one fact stands prominently out: he is an Irishman. An Irishman in wit, an Irishman in wisdom, a loyal, true blooded son of the Emerald Isle, with all that such implies in the life and character of a man. John Joynt was born in the county of Mayo, Ireland, in 1856. In 1857 his parents, with their family, emigrated to Canada, and took up residence in the township of Whitby and Darlington. Nineteen years later they removed to .the township of West Wawanosh, coming up by way of Goderich and settling at St. Helens. Railway facilities in those days were more limited than now: transportation to St. Helens was effected by team and wagon. Until twenty years of age, the subject of this sketch remained under the home roof -tree. At St. Helens, his father was engaged in the manufacture of Potash; and the son, when he went forth on his own responsibility, commenced the Wood -Ash business in a small way. Wonderful changes and wonderful success have followed that venture. Twenty seven years ago, John Joynt was his own teamster and collector of the ashes: now he has over one hundred men and teams so engaged in various parts of the province. Twenty seven years go, he was his own manager, stenographer and office assistant, using only plain pens and paper for the writing of letters; now he has a manager, a stenographer, two type- writers, with a correspondence that sometimes runs into one hundred thousand letters annually. Twenty-sev- en years ago, when a journey was made between Goderich and Lucknow, he came in a stage coach driven by Jock Adams; in June of the present year, Jock Adanis rode to Goderich and back again in a special train chartered by John Joynt. A catalogue of business interests, if indicative of growth end development from small beginning, is not uninterest- ing. it is still more interesting if that growth and development has occurred along lines of manliness and business integrity. Hence it may be said that besides the exportation of wood ashes Mr. Joynt is also engaged in the evaporating and exporting of apples, having evaporting plants in Lucknow and Walkerton; and is proprietor of 'Mayfield' Farm, at St. Helens, a property containing four hundred and fifty acres, where its owner repairs at times to enjoy in agricultural pursuits, change and relaxation from the cares of business. Further reference to John Joynt in a biographical way, would necessitate a reference to his municipal activities. He has been, since the beginning of 1909, Reeve of the village. In that capacity, with its consequent connection with the County Council of Bruce, he was instrumental in bringing to pass an event unique in municipal history - the holding of the June session of the County Council in Lucknow. That session was a memorable one, not merely as a session or because held in Lucknow, but because of two events Turn to page 170 From the Citizens of Wingham... To the Citizens of Lucknow...
