Steadily, ten hours every working day, year in and year out, only an occasional pause, its wheels kept turning; steadily, like a flowing river, its products go forth from the shipping rooms to all parts of the Dominion, making the name of Luck - now, as connected with Furniture, almost as widely known as did the old Caledonian Games. For nearly thirty years Lucknow has had a Furniture Factory - but not the present one. Firms came and went; buildings were erected and allowed to go to ruin again; and the time came when the Furniture industry in Lucknow seemed to have finally passed away. Then came another man on the scene - a man of different methods and different ideals - and with his coming commenced a new era in the Industrial history of the village. Mr. John Button, to whom reference is here made, was an experienced furniture man. For ten years, in part- nership with Mr. H. J. Trevett, he had been engaged in the manufacture of furniture in Teeswater. In the year 1898 the factory in Lucknow now was standing idle. Inducements were offer- ed to the Teeswater firm to come to Lucknow; and the outcome was the removal of the machinery from the Teeswater factory and the commence- ment of active operations here. Those operations have been continued with few interruptions to the present day. In Lucknow as in Teeswater, the firm specialized on one line of goods - Tables. Their removal transpired at the commencement of a period of good times, when the question was, not how to sell goods but how to make them fast enough; and a trade was established which at times pushed the factory to its utmost capacity. The factory building then was a frame one, neither comfort- able nor beautiful; and the time came when new quarters became not only desirable but absolutely necessary. In 1907, Mr. Trevett withdrew from the partnership; and Mr. Button, in the face of necessity for building, practically decided to close up the business and retire to other activities. Once more the village stepped in to preserve its lead- ing industry. Inducements were made, influence was brought to bear, and the industry was retained. Following the withdrawal of Mr. Trevett, arrangements were made with Mr. Jesse Button, of Wingham, and ith Mr. Geo. Aitcheson, for many years foreman of the woodworking de- partment, in Teeswater and Lucknow, - both of them capable and experienced men, - to take certain interests in the business; and the firm, under the name of the Lucknow Furniture Company, with Mr. John Button as manager, prepared for final establishment. In the summer of 1907, at a. cost of nearly ten thousand dollars, the modern, fire- proof, concrete plant of the Company was built; new machinery was added; other adjustments were made; and the result has been worth, to the firm and to the village of Lucknow every effort involved. A look through the factory reveals how well adapted it is to its special purpose. Not an inch of room is wasted anywhere. From the door -way of the dry kiln where the rough lumber enters, to the door -way in the shipping room where it comes out in the form of finished tables, arrangements are such as to economize both time and labor; and these arrangements, it may be said, are absolutely necessary to meet the demand for Lucknow tables. —1910 Reunion Edition The Luclmow Sentinel LUNGRATULATIONS LUCKNOW 125th BIRTHDAY ZUe afe td oun veluy deaf u talsed to tyre cereyea4 iese40444 Olad Ade Pada ed4,uru 6o4 an e4wia6le and acaeeQ*/ Atotifftmeee '83 u.edead. On the field days of the old Caledon- ian Society no man was more conspicu- ous to the assembled multitudes than Jimmy Hunter. Possessing the voice of a Troubadour - ready to shout or ready to sing as occasion required - to him was delegated the announcement of the results of the athletic contests. No megaphone did Jimmy require: like a trumpet blast his stentorian tones rolled forth to the very limits of the field, not forgotten to this day by those who were present to hear him. 4, Congratulations Lucknow on your 125th Anniversary Langside Store R. 3, Teeswater Allan & Lucy Miller, Susan, Karen & Jimmy R.5, Lucknow 528-2299 392-8240 Best Wishes to our friends in Lucknow on your 125th Birthday Huron landscaping Ltd.
