Lucknow
Agricultural
Society
an honourable
organization
This Society was formed
June 30, 1863 by James
Somerville, the `father of
Lucknow', who formed a
village in 1858. President
James Somerville; vice-pres-
ident, William Lane; secret-
ary, T. J. Rooklidge. As early
as 1877, the membership was
145.
An early record relates
there was horse racing and
as there were three prizes
and only two entries, Jock
Adams entered his team and
crossed the field half way
round the track to come in
Originally called Kinloss
branch of the agricultural
society, the first fair was held
in the spring of 1877, live-
stock and roots being featur-

Lucknow market square; sec -
on J. Sommerville's driving
park and then on Caledonian
Park. Lady directors have
been active since 1916.
The society marked its
centennial in 1965 and one of
the exhibitors was Jessie
McKay, 98 -year-old resident
of Lucknow who exhibited
the hair wreath, paper flow-

An institution that' has
long held an honored posi-
tion in the opinion of the
people of Lucknow and sur-
rounding country is the Agri-
cultural Society. It was or-
ganized about forty two years
ago under the presidency of
the late Robert Hunter of
Ashfield. Following Mr.
Hunter, Mr. Peter H. Mc-
Kenzie, ex-M.P. became
president and filled the posi-
tion with marked ability until
1904, when, owing to the
demands upon his time of
Hackett, Wilson Hamilton, Joseph Agnew, John McQuWin, Peter Watson
and Neil Murdock.
other public duties, he re-
tired. Mr. McKenzie was
followed by Mr. James Bryan
who presided for two years,
when he made way for Mr.
Walter Wilson, who is now
the chief executive. The first
secretary was Mr. W. H.
Smith. But the man who was
best known in that capacity is
Mr. John Murchison, who
looked after the clerical work
for a long term of years. He
was succeeded by Mr. J. L.
Naylor, who in turn has been
followed by Mr. C. G. Locke.
The annual fall fair held by
the Society has long been
noted, among the smaller
exhibitions for the splendid
exhibits of live stock.
