Famed band will participate
in Legion Drumhead service
The Lucknow Legion Branch are very proud to have
obtained the services of the famous Ontario Massed Legion
Pipes and Drums to lead their parade from the Public School
to the Jamboree Drumhead Service in the park on Sunday,
July 3. The band will also entertain the audience following
the completion of the service.
Many will remember seeing this band on television
representing Canada at the Tournament of Roses Parade on
two separate occasions.
The Ontario Massed Legion Pipes and Drums Band was a
dream brought to reality in 1974 by Senior Pipe Major Ross
Baxter of the Collingwood Legion Pipe Band. He dreamed of
a happy band of ambassadors travelling to far away places
representing Ontario, Canada and The Royal Canadian
Legion.
Since it's beginning, the tall and imposing figure of
Senior Drum Major Bill McCutcheon has marched at the
head of the Massed Band. He is a retired Toronto Police
Sergeant and for many years was one of Canada's foremost
Drum Majors leading the Toronto Police Pipe Band. He is
now gaining the international recognition he so richly
deserves.
Following the Drum Majors, numerous pipers and many
drummers, are the 20 Royal Canadian Legion Veterans
proudly carrying the flags of Canada, Ontario, Legion
Branches and various flags presented to the Massed Band in
Mexico, Florida, California and Scotland. This fine body of
"old" soldiers are very capably led by Sgt. -at -Arms Len
Coupland and he has been "keeping them in line" since
1974 when the Band was formed. The members of the
Colour Party come from Legion Branches all over Ontario
with most of them having served as Branch, Zone and
District Officers.
The Massed Band has performed in every major parade
and Highland Games throughout Ontario. The first major
parade o':tside dhc country was in Miami at the King Orange
Parade on December 31 1974 which of course is nationally
televised and resulted in the Massed Band being noticed by
many other people running parades. The Massed Band also
established a tradition of giving concerts to the patients in
Veterans' hospitals wherever they are able to. The Band
was invited back to Miami to do the King Orange Parade
again on December 31. 1976 and by then invitations to
perform started to roll in. They next accepted the invitation
to be in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena,
California on January 2, 1978 which is the oldest and most
prestigious parade in the United States. This 51/2 mile
parade is viewed by 1,500.000 spectators lining the route
and it is estimated that over 100 million people watch it
throughout the world on television. During this trip the
Massed Band also did a special invitational parade in
Tijuana, Mexico where the day was declared a "holiday" so
that the people and children could watch this unique band
perform. Then followed an invitation from the City of San
Francisco, which was accepted, for the Massed Band to be a
part of their Parade of Carnations on September 24, 1978.
However, the Massed. Band finally accepted all of the
invitations they had been receiving from Scotland and did a
Grand 18 Day Tour of the home of bagpipes from August 16
to September 3, 1979. They started off the fust weekend as
the Feature Band at the Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade down
the famous two miles of Princes Street lined by 500,000
spectators. Two miles that every piper in the world would
like to march playing his heart out all the way. They ended
their triumphant tour as the Feature Band of the grand old
Royal Highland Gathering at Braemar on Saturday.
September 1, 1979. In between these major weekends, the
Massed Band did special invitational Parades in Glasgow,
Aberdeedn, Dundee, Perth and Ayr.
The next major trip was back to southern California to do
the Rose Parade, again, on January 1, 1980; as well as
parades in Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm and another
super trip to Tujuana, Mexico. This time almost 650 people
travelled in the group. The Rose Parade was bigger than
ever with the ex -Canadian Lorne Greene as the Grand
Parade Marshall and floats from Ontario, Quebec, British
Columbia and Calgary, added to the theme "The Great
Outdoors".
On Tuesday, January 4, 1983 almost 100 paraders along
with about 300 supporters left Toronto aboard a Wardair
luxury charter jet flying non-stop for the 10 hour journey to
Honolulu to start the two week Hawaii/Canada Friendship
Tour. They spent the 5 days on the big island of
