Amnesty group hears about "the disappeared"
Amnesty International Ac-
tion Group 125 met at the
home of Martha Sheppard on
June 2.
Two visitors from the Kin-
cardine A.I. group, Lynda
Curnoe and Cindy Mindorff,
reported on the annual gen-
eral meeting held in Ottawa
in May.
Among those who spoke at
the general meeting in Ot-
tawa were: Lloyd Airworthy
on Immigration; Donald
Woods, who was raised in
South Africa, was imprison-
ed, escaped, and now travels
about the world telling of
conditions in South Africa;
several persons who had
been prisoners of the month
and were released and some
mothers from El Salvador,
who spoke on behalf of those
who have "disappeared" in
El Salvador. At the AGM
there were workshops on
membership training, fund
raising and AI's work with
governments.
On May 24, Laura Lee
Cayley, Norma Weatherhead
and Margaret Ferguson at-
tended a U.C.W. meeting in
the Belgrave United Church
to present information on the

work of Amnesty Interna-
tional, as the Belgrave ladies
had expressed interest in
starting an Amnesty Inter-
national action group in Bel -
grave.
Recently, the local action
group 125 received an urgent
action appeal on behalf of
three teenagers in Peru, who
were arrested in April 1983,
detained, tortured, and
whose whereabouts remain
unknown to their families. AI
is concerned because the
arrests were carried out at
night by heavily armed men
dressed in civilian clothes.
