Lucknow concert band plays at Victoria Park bandshell Editor's Note: The Lucknow School Concert Band has just returned from their annual band trip. Laura Lee Cayley, wife of band director, Gordon Cayley, has written the following report of the tour. Lucknow Concert Band Tour '83 Tuesday, May 24 dawned bright but chilly as 83 band members set off in two buses for a four day tour. Our first concert was at Exeter Public School where we played for a very energetic crowd of kindergarten to grade 8 students. Numbers such as, The Lone Ranger, Great- est American Hero, and Mame/Hello Dolly, were greatly enjoyed and we received our first standing ovation. We ate our lunch in the Riverview Park, Exeter and then went on to Biddulph Public School in Lucan. The gym was very small so seating was cramped and the atmosphere warm. After the concert some of our members played a game of basketball with some students. Our haven for the night was The Hyland Motel in London. While some took a dip in the outdoor pool, others unpacked before we were off to Whiteoaks Mall for supper and shopping. We found some hidden identities in our band when "Rat boy" (Tony) purchased two white mice and "Fish head" (Allyson) bought a goldfish, adding three extra passengers. We also had a "Hat woman" ("l racy) who entertained everyone throughout the tour with her special purchase. Bus problems started our second day with the yellow bus doing double trips. At Nlountsfield Public School, London only Grades 4 to 8 came to the concert. Younger students, and their teachers were upset that they hadn't been allowed to enjoy our band. After lunch at The Garage, we went to Ecole Alexandre, for French speaking stud- ents. Liz Black gave a speech in French but the rest we did in English. We were given an enthusiastic standing ovation. At McDonald's, we met a couple who knew "Bill" who used to be an electrician in Lucknow. Bill is in his 90's and is coming to the Jamboree. The weather was cold and raining all day and it was very chilly for our evening concert at the Kiwanis Memorial Band shell in Victoria Park. A few people braved the weather to enjoy our concert. We celebrated Melissa Becker's 16th birthday and Heather MacDougall's 15th with a party at McDonald's. Thursday morning we travelled to Inger- soll to play a concert at Victoria Memorial Public School. Some members met an old friend, Brad De Groot and again we were given a standing ovation. After having lunch in Woodstock, we played a concert in Otterville Public School with a few extra numbers for one class returning from swimming classes. We stayed our last night at the Minden Motel in Simcoe where we could enjoy an indoor pool. a weight exercise room, sauna and whirlpool. Members had supper and shopped at a new mall there. Our Friday morning concert was at South Ridge Public School, Tillsonburg where pupils from Kindergarten to Grade 6 enjoyed Turn to page 5• I 20 Pages Lucknow Presbyterian WMS celebrates 100th anniversary A memorable occasion took place on Wednesday, June 1 when the Lucknow Presbyterian Women's Missionary Society observed its 100th anniversary with a special meeting held in the church. A delightful luncheon was served at 12.30 p.m. to almost one hundred guests. Mrs. Cyril Brown was Master of Ceremonies and welcomed everyone. She introduced the guests at the head table. Mrs. J. E. Little, president of the W.M.S., spoke a few words of welcome. A beautifully decorated birthday cake, made and presented to the W.M.S. by Mrs. Leonard MacInnes, was cut by Mrs. William Porteous, who has been a member of the W.M.S. for over fifty years. At the conclusion of the luncheon, Mrs. Brown read several letters of greetings from former members who were unable to be present. Mrs. Morgan Henderson presided for the meeting, held in the church santuary, with Mrs. Bruce Raynar4l and Mrs. Bert Moffat at the organ and piano. The devotions were taken by Mrs. Wallace Wilson, the theme being "Faith". The MacDonald sisters, Mrs. William Henderson, Mrs. Alvin Mundell and Mrs. James Brisbin, sang two selections. Mrs. Ross Cumming led in prayer. Two timely readings were given by Mrs. Jim Aitchison. A historical sketch of the work of the W.M.S. was presented by Mrs. Noble Johnston. She traced the work of the society since its beginning, and pointed out how faithfully the members had carried on during the years. Several members became mis- sionaries and served in foreign fields. The scripture, Philippians, 2, was read by Mrs. Norman Taylor, on which Mrs. Don Robertson, the guest speaker, based her address. Mrs. Robertson brought together the past and the present, linking one with the other. Service, joy and love were stressed as part of our everyday living. Courtesy remarks were given by Mrs. Omar Brooks and Mrs. Ramsay closed the meeting with prayer.
