Doctors must
continue
education
By Henry Hess
Doctors must be prepared to keep on
learning if they want to retain their
privileges as members of the active medical
staff at the Wingham and District Hospital.
In a report to the hospital last week, Chief
of Staff Dr. J. Chong Ping said the medical
staff plans to make it a condition that all
physicians on active staff must receive 30
hours of continuing education each year, and
be qualified to perform CPR (cardiopulmon-
ary resuscitation).
Dr. Ping later explained this policy is
intended to -make sure doctors keep up with
new developments in their fields. A number
of local doctors are members of the College
of Family Physicians, he noted, and the
college requires a minimum of 100 hours of
continuing education every two years.
He said that while some other hospitals
have similar requirements for their staff, he
does not think it is very common. The rule
was first introduced by the local medical
staff association a year or two -ago, he said,
but this year the requirement has been
increased to 30 hours from 20.
Hospital Executive Director Norman Hay-
es said there is a "fairly intensive process"
of verifying credentials before any new
appointments are recommended.

She has been recognized by the Catholic
Nurses' Association in Detroit where she
nursed for some 46 years for her volunteer
work in the Detroit diocese. She also worked
as a volunteer with the Catholic Workers
program which operated a soup kitchen for
men from skid row during the 1930s.
Bernadine was the only worker to have a
car, given to her by her uncle. And she
would go to the butcher shop and pick up the
soup bones they had saved for the workers
and then on to the farmers' market to collect
the culls. Soon the bake shop was saving
their day old bread. During the "second
depression" in 1938, the workers were
feeding between 400 and 500 men. For many
of them, it was their only meal of the day.
Following the depression, the Catholic
Workers opened the Holy Trinity Medical
Clinic which provided medical services to a
growing Mexican population in the commun-
ity.
Bernadine O'Loughlin is the eldest child
of the late Joseph O'Loughlin and May
Griffin. Born in Detroit, her father returned
to help out on the Kingsbridge farm during
the war and Bernadine passed her entrance
exams at S. S` # 9, Ashfield. Her family
moved back to Detroit permanently in May
of 1927 and she attended high school there.
Following high school she was at home for
21/4 years while her sister, Margaret was a
baby and then entered nurse's training at
Providence Hospital in Detroit, She trained
under the Daughters of Charity of St.
Vincent de Paul, the sisters who first
organized nursing as we know it today. She
was the first student nurse to attend a
national nurses convention.
She graduated in 1927 and since hospital

work did not pay a good wage and Bernadine
felt responsible for helping out the family,
she entered private duty nursing after
working in a doctor's office for six month.
The work was difficult and sporadic but she
never made Tess than $900 a year.
Bernadine took her responsibility to her
family seriously and didn't marry until she
was in her forties. She knew her husband,
Jack Kinney for six years before they
married. She hesitated because he was a
widower with teenage children, Finally he
told her "Dearie, from now on you're going
to be doing the asking." Bernadine thought
it might be her last chance and they were
married in 1946.
Their marriage was happy but very short.
Jack died of a coronary in 1954 and Mrs.
Kinney treasures the memories of their
married years even today. "1 never wanted
to marry another man," she says.
Looking ahead to being an octogenarian,
she says she hopes to find time to write
about her memories of het family and to
continue her research of family genealogy.
She intends to remain active on the Gaol
board and with some of the other organiza-
tions she enjoys. She plans a garden party on
the lawn of her home this summer and is
looking forward to the opening of the Livery
Theatre in Goderich this month.
Of her nursing career. Mrs. Kinney says
the personal touch was the most rewarding.
Working with people and being given the
opportunity to be with loved ones when they
died.
While she finds caring for others most
rewarding, many of her friends will say they
are better for having been touched in this
lifetime by the friendship of Bernadine
Kinney.
