editor's notebook
Our readers are sometimes confused by the Sentinel's
court policy,
The Sentinel will not cover court on a regular basis. The
names of persons involved in Highway Traffic Act vioia
tions, offences against the Liquor Control Act of Ontario
and minor infractions of the Criminal Code of Canada, will
not be reported in regular police reports.
Serious crime which draws wide public interest, murders,
robberies, drug trafficking, fraud, extortion, for example,
are exceptions to the rule. Once the charges are reported,
the case is followed to its absolute conclusion and the
decision is printed in at least as prominent a location in the
paper as that in which the charges were originally reported.
This policy explains why some charges are reported and
the reason for the use of names in some court reporting and
not in others.
Court reporting is a labour intensive job if the paper
decides to report on all court proceedings. The Sentinel does
not have the staff nor the resources available to provide a
fulltime court reporter. As the present court policy means
some charges will be reported while others will not, the
publisher and editor of the newspaper must decide which
charges will be published within the limitations dictated by
the staff requirements and the resources of the paper.
