Tractor pullers win in Europe
Canadian tractor pullers Art and Barb
Helm of Lucknow and Frank and Mary
Verheyen of Kerwood have returned from an
invitational tractor pull in Holland where
they competed against the top European
tractors, and the Canadians won it all!
The pull held in Rotterdam saw the
Canadian tractors, Helms' V-12 Allison
Aircraft, "Second Choice" and Verl.eyens'
V-12 Rolls Royce, "Gold Digger" compete
against the top five tractors from Holland,
the top three tractors front Germany and the
top two tractors from Britain.
In Europe the tractors pull in an afternoon
session and an evening session and the
pullers choose their best pull for their final
standing. If there are full pulls in either of
the sessions, a pull off is held to determine
the winner.
Barb Helm drove "Second Choice" in the
7,000 class and placed second to Frank
Verheyen's "Gold Digger", in the afternoon
session. Frank went on to compete in the
evening session of the 7,000 class and won
the class.
Barb did not compete in the evening
session in this class because "Second
Choice" was competing in the 12,000 class
in the evening and there was not time to
change the weights and cool down the
tractor between the two classes.
Mary Verheyen and Art Helm made full
pulls in the 9,000 class in both the afternoon
and evening sessions and Mary went on to
the pull oft in the evening and won the class.
Art did 'not compete in the pull off because
he was competing in the 12,000 class the
same evening.
Art took first place in the afternoon
session of the 12,000 class and made a full
pull in the evening session. He then went on
to the 12,000 class pull off and won the class.
The final standings in the three classes in
which the Canadians competed saw the
Ontario tractor pullers win all three classes.
Frank and the "Gold Digger" won the 7,000;
Mary and the "Gold Digger" won the 9,000
and Art and the Second Choice won the
12,000.
This was the first time Canadian tractors
have been asked to compete in European
invitational pull. American tractors have
gone to Europe to compete in the past.
Helms and Verheyens had their expenses
paid by the promoters of the pull including
the charges to ship the tractors to Europe by
ship container, their flight tickets and their
accommodation while they were in Europe.
Following the pull, they holidayed in Europe
for a week before returning home February
17.
While in Rotterdam the couples were
approached by the promoter of the European
Championship pull which is to be held in
Britain this fall. They were invited to attend
the pull but as yet there has been no formal
invitation.
Bruce board of education
extend teachers' agreement
Bruce County's 220 secondary school
teachers say there will be no ratification of
any collective agreement with the board of
education according to the teachers' chief
negotiator Mark Ciavaglia, because no
agreement has been reached.
The board of education accepted their
negotiating committee's recommendations
at their February meeting to implement the
guidelines of the inflation Restraint Act
which extends the terms and conditions of
expired collective agreements.
There is provision in the Act where terms
can be negotiated and changed by mutual
agreement and with the approval of the
Inflation Restraint Board.
Board chairman Barry Schmidt said the
board was not convinced an agreement on
outstanding issues could be reached so they
decided to hold these issues over until the
coming discussions on the contract for
1983-84 which will begin shortly.
Schmidt said the board is prepared to
listen to the teachers concerns and it is
possible mutual agreement will be reached.
The teachers have sent a letter to the board
inviting a meeting to negotiate outstanding
issues and the board replied saying they
were willing to discuss the issues but are not
prepared to bargain.
"We are not prepared to negotiate the
terms of the contract because under the
existing legislation we do not have to nego-
tiate a contract," said Schmidt. The Inflation
Restraint Act provides that the terms and

conditions of the expired collective agree-
ment will be extended for this year and next.
"The board is just putting off the
inevitable for one or two years," commented
Ciavaglia. "We just came through a long
strike which was settled in a heated rush.
There is wording in the contract which will
lead to costly grievances." The teachers
would like to have more input into the
system, he explained.
The teachers want to see guarantees in the
collective agreement regarding such issues
as proper staffing arrangements to meet the
requirements of the students in special

gingham hospital presses
for new emergency wing
By Henry Hess
The Wingham and District Hospital is
continuing to press for a new emergency and
outpatient services wing at the south end of
the hospital.
Following a closed session at the end of
last week's meeting of the hospital board,
board members voted unanimously to pro-
ceed with plans for the building program,
while awaiting a verdict from the Health
Ministry on its support for the project.
The estimated cost of the project is $1.4
million, of which the ministry is being asked
to contribute S250,000, with the remainder
to come from the county, the hospital's won
funds and a community fund raising drive.
Executive Director Norman Hayes said
that while meeting in camera the board
reviewed the process of what has been done
to date regarding the proposed new wing,
and decided to proceed to the point of
getting tenders, at which time it will know
whether it can afford to go ahead.
Meanwhile, it is continuing to wait for an
official reply from the ministry on its request
for approval of the project.
Lucknow business association
make Jamboree 83 plans
The Lucknow Business Association met on
Wednesday, February 16, with 17 busines-
ses represented. Delores Cross and Eleanor
MacDonald attended, representing the
Decorating Committee for Jamboree '83.
The Business Association currently has
$1357.73 in their account, with 51 businesses
having paid their 1982 fees to date. These
fees were late in being collected as they are
normally collected in November of each
year.
Nancy Quinn displayed a sample of a sign
that had been designed for the Lucknow
Business Association, which would hang at
both ends of town along with the service club
signs. The two signs will be made up and
installed at a cost of 540.
The Business Association is contacting the
Stayner Pipe Band to represent the associa-
tion in the Jamboree '83 parade, provided
they have not been booked as yet.
Delores Cross explained the plans the
Decorating Committee have for the use of
the S800 donation from the association for
decorating the main street area with trees,
flowers and flags for the celebrations.
Lengthy discussion was held on the assoc-
iation's promotion of the town or individual
business promotion via advertising prior to
Jamboree '83. A meeting will be held to
discuss advertising on March 16, at 2 p.m. at
the Mayfair Restaurant. All businesses are
