editor's notebook
Our readers may have noticed the pictures taken by
Sentinel staff photographers are sharper, dearer and the
quality is more consistent.
We have started screening our prints in the Sentinel's dark
room. Previously, films were developed and the pictures
printed in our dark room by the editor. They were sent on to
the composing department's dark room in the Goderich office
where they were photographed again and became PMTS. The
PMT was then printed in the paper.
A picture cannot be minted in the paper as it is. Pictures
must be photographed again through a process called
screening where a screen is laid over the photographic paper
and the negative is imprinted on the paper through the
screen.
The resulting print is composed of millions of tiny dots
which pick up the ink when the paper is printed and
reproduce the picture. An ordinary photo does not have these
dots and the picture will not reproduce because there is
nothing to pick up the ink. A picture which is not screened will
look like a child's hieroglyphics in the newspaper.
Staff can now screen prints in our dark room, which
produces better quality pictures than PMTS and also allows
the Sentinel's staff to have more quality control over the
pictures which will appear in the paper.
We can only screen the pictures taken by Sentinel staff
however, because you must work with a negative. Pictures of
weddings or Jamboree pictures submitted by our readers will
still be forwarded to Goderich to be made into PMTs and as in
the past, we cannot guarantee the quality of the picture when
it appears in the paper.
When submitting a picture for reproduction in the paper,
remember a black and white picture k always more suitable
than colour. Our medium works in black ink on white paper
and the camera sees a lot of red in colour pictures which turns
black in the PMTS and therefore picks up a lot of ink.
Consequently many pictures which look fine as colour prints,
are very dark and black in the paper when reproduced.
For satisfactory results in the paper, it it best to work with a
black and white print if possible. Many wedding pictures
especially, are taken in colour becatase afterall, the couple
does not want a photo album of black and white photos when
coloured pictures are so beautiful.
We can reproduce colour prints with fairly respectable
results, if the coloured picture has Tots of light on the faces
and is taken close up to the bridal couple. Weddings are
important family events. Readers are especially disappointed
when wedding pictures do 'not reproduce satisfactorily and
the groom comes up looking like a monkey because his dark
tan resulted in a very dark face.
Pictures are a very important part of any newspaper. Many
eople say the first thing they look at in the paper are the
tures. They brighten up the pages which would be rather
, with only gray words. And as everybody knows, a good
re is worth a thousand words.
