Fancy cakes and other sweets complete
the meal.
The presents are then distributed by
the youngest child able to do so. The
tree is loaded down with hand -made
decorations. Conversation is lively.
Everyone then attends midnight mass.
Ukrainian -Canadian celebrations are
very similar, but are two weeks later,
since the Julian calendar places their
Christmas on January 6.
"Kutia", a delicious cake made from
wheat germ and whole wheat coated
with honey, Is prepared on that day.
The father solemnly serves the kutia to
each family member as hewishes him
or her a Merry Christmas.
Among the most original Christmas
celebrations in Canada are those native
to Newfoundland. There is, of course,
the traditional Christmas tree and
midnight mass, but in addition, children
wearing costumes or masks go from
door to door and through old peoples'
and nursing homes. They play music
and sing in the streets. They are
referred to as "mummers" or "jan-
nies" and. the custom is called
"mummering" or "janning", depend-
ing on the region of Newfoundland in
question. This tradition of carolling is
said to have originated with the
wandering minstrels of the Middle
Ages. Since Newfoundland is more
isolated than the other provinces, it has
had more success in preserving the
European traditions it inherited. Many
of the inhabitants are of British descent
and the "mummers", who are reminis-
cent of the troubadours, also remind us
of the customs surrounding our Hallow-
e'en.
Christmas traditions in Canada are
many and varied, but always festive.
Walk-ihrough wreath
This impressive wreath welcomes visitors to walk through a
ring of light which looks brighter than it really is. Actually,
this effect is achieved with only 25 standard outdoor C9 lights.
They get an assist from a floodlight concealed under overhang
as well as using a silver reflector behind each C9 bulb.
