Mormonism cult or religion
BY S. C. BEAUMONT
The Mormon Church (The
Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints) was or-
ganized on the 6th• of April,
1830. Since then it has
rapidly grown, and now has
become one of the fastest
growing Christian churches
in the world, with a present
rate of growth of over 136
persons each day. The chur-
ch's 148 year history indica-
te
s that this number will
continue to increase.
Why is it 4hat, this church
grows so fast? Let's put, aside
the fact that there are over
28,000 Mormon missionaries
around the world, as all they
really do is make people
aware of their teachings.
Let's also put aside the
doctrines of the Mormon
church, which; incidentally',
receive more and more On-
firmation to their validity
each day by the great trans-
lators presently working on
the •new finding of Biblical.
writings, s_uch as the Dead
Sea Scrolls and those found
at Nag Hammadi. Over 3,000
books have been published
on these subjects.
Most Mormons live a way
of life desired by many,
many people. This constitut-
es the living of their religion
every day of the week. As
neighbours they are willing
to give a helping hand to
anyone in need. Dedicated
Mormons have a genuine
love for all mankind.
To Latter Day Saints, the
family, is the most important
unit in the world, and so they
will do all in their, power to
keep it close. One night a
week is especially set aside
so that the parents and
children can sit down togeth-
er to plan such things as
vacations and family pro-
jects. Individual ambitions
and ,goals can be set togeth-.
er, making it possible for
them' to be reached. This
same evening is the ideal
time for the family to have
fun together, instead of each
person amusing himself with
such passtimes as T.V. or the
Stereo. Parents learn to
obtain and retain the respect
of their childre,n. Children
recognize more clearly the
true value of their actions
and the consequences of
chosing either right or
wrong..
There is solidarity in Mor-
mon marriages. They tend to
last longer and be much
happier than most. The,
divorce rate of Latter Day
.Saints is much lower than the
national average.
The saying "A family that
,prays together stays togeth-
er" is very, very true of
Mormons. Prayer is extreme-
ly important to them. They
love to pray to their Heavenly
Father' - and discuss with
Him all the decisions they
are facing. Prayer brings a
great deal of comfort into
their lives as they are
assured that God loves them
andwill bless them richly.
For God to direct them
spiritually in their lives,
Mormons believe that their
body should be healthy. With
a healthy body,- mind and
soul, they find the learning
process so much easier. The
Caption "The Glory of God Is
Intelligence" is found in
many of the institutes of the
church, and from this you
can see Mormons excel in the
search for scholastic know-
ledge.
As well as learning, Latter
Day Saints believe very much
in good, honest, hard work.
They find a dignity in work
because of the opportunity it
offers to continually learn
new skills and also to grow in
character and personality.
Basically, Mormons be-
lieve in obtaining Everlasting
happiness; and they know
this is found by following
Christ's invitation to follow
Him and show their love for
Him by keeping His Com-
mandments. The growth of
the Mormon church is mainly
due to the high standards of
the gospel which it fully
adheres to.
Because the Mormons live
the gospel of love that Christ
instituted, is it any wonder
that it works? All types of
people are found in the
Latter Day Saint church. It's
said it helps bad men become
good and good men become
better.
