Fight lung disease
Christmas Seals continue a
Canadian tradition, And
fight lung disease in children.
and adults.
In the early part of this
century, Christmas Sea, Is led
the attack against a monster
• disease called the "White
Plague", The plague was
tuberculosis, which wiped
out families and swept a
nation. Christmas Seals
made it possible for everyone
who cared, of however little
means, to join that fight and
send in their pennies or
dollars.
Today lung disease in Can-
ada is vastly different and
more complex, although over
2,500 Canadians still have
TB disease.
Other lung disease in
Canada is vastly different
and more- complex, -although
over 2,500 Canadians still
have TB disease.
Other lung diseases, how-
eve.L., pose even greater
threats to public health. In
the early 1900's, for exam-
ple, cigarette smoking hardly
existed. But today cigarette
smoking is the cause of a
tragic epidemic, vvhich caus-
es the premature deaths of
more than 30,000 Canadians
—ever. year. Chemical plants,
induptries of all kinds, and
even the automobile were
undreamed of in the old
days. Today they're all major
causes -of the air pollution
that befoul •our spacious
skies.
According to the Ontario
Lung Association, the total
economic cost of diseases of
the respiratory system is
estimated at over one billion
dollars each year. And that
does not include the incalculJ
able cost of the human
suffering involved. Approx-
imately 4 million Canadians
children and adults - suffer
