Ripley rink wins playdown bonspiel
Four ladies from this
area put Ripley in the
news early last week.
They formed the ladies
team taking part in the
district bonspiel , in
Wingham last Monday,
Tuesday, and Wed-
nesday. The skip of the
team was Diane Brooks
of the Paramount area of
Huron township on High-
way 86, --the former
Diane Schultz of Ripley.
Her team mates are
Hilda Andrew vice skip,
Dianne Farrell, and June
Paquette. They won five
straight games, --no
losses, playing teams
from Durham, Goderich,
Kurtzville, and Listowel.
The playdowns were
held in the Curling Arena
at the new Wingham
Complex. The scores of
the games which Ripley
played and won were as
follows --Durham 9 to 8,
Goderich 10 to 6, Kurt-
zville 7 to 3, and Listowel.
12 to 6. Then Diane
reports that they played
Listowel a second time on
Wednesday morning and
it was quite a gamellor
the Ripley ladies. On
warm wishes for a
holiday without measure, among
your gifts this Christmas.
Thanks for being our friend.

happy holiday .....filled with lots of cheer!
Our gratitude for your kind support.
completion of the first
three ends the score was 8
for Listowel to ope for
Ripley, then the 'Ripley
team came from behind
to take the game—score
Ripley 10, Listowel 8 at
the end of the match.
As winners at Wingham
they now advance
playing next on Jan. 3 and
4 in the Kincardine
Curling Rink. Here they
will meet teams from
Kitchener,' London, and
Windsor, to name some --
all winners in their
districts.
Congratulations from
this area go the ladies on
their fine—playing in
Wingham and best wishes
when they play in Kin-
cardine. Diane says that
two teams from the
Kincardine bonspiel will,
go on to play in Peter-
borough later in January.
Right around twelve
noon last Thursday the
Ripley Fire Whistle
sounded. The Ripley
firemen went to the home
of the Gawley sisters,
Lettie and Ethel, where
they were able to deal
with an oil stove burning
out of control. Ethel and
Lettie Gawley express
their thanks to Ripley
firemen for saving their
home on Tain Street.
We erred in last week's
paper. Mrs. Isabel Love
who is undergoing
treatments in Kincardine
District hospital was not
able to return home as
reported but is still a
patient there.
Mrs. Nora Frederiksen
who has been undergoing
tests in Kincardine and
Owen Soundhospitals
returned home - last
Wednesday. Niels and
Nora received the news of
the death of their friend
Les Ross last Tuesday.
Often during the past
summers Mr and Mrs
Ross would drive up to
Ripley with their Camper
home and parked it by
Niels and Nora's home
and visited with them.
They became known to a
number of people in the
Malcolm Street area.
They lived in Keswick.
Ripley friends extend
sympathy to Lil—Mrs.
Ross at this time of
bereavement.
This writer feels that a
statement made recently
in a weekly newspaper
"that Remembrance Day
Parade was ' a,• waste of
time to be in poor taste. It
shows no concern for
those. men in the parade
who are veterans of the
World -Wars and are out
there marching again.
Also little for the families
of those who did not
return or are still in
hospitals: Let us care for
the feeling of others as
well as Our own.
Back from St. Joseph's
Hospital in • London is
Norman Barnard of
Ripley and is presently
recuperating at home.
Also reported home from
St. Joe's is Clarenee
Wylds of Ripley who
underwent tests and
treatment there.
Expecting to return home
at this time of writing is
Vic Gawley of Purple
Grove and Ripley. Jack
Blue has been tran-
sferred back to Kin-
cardine and.. District
Hospital. Also in Victoria
Hospital for the past
couple of weeks. is Nor-
man MacDonald of
Ripley and formerly of
the 8th concession west.
Present reports are that
Norman is recovering.
Norman took ill at the
Ripley Huron Legion hall.
He was taken home and
then to Kincardine and
then to London. Also in
Victoria Hospital for the
past few weeks is Mrs.
Martha Huston of Ripley.
Mrs. Violet MacKenzie
and family held their
Christmas gathering at
the home of Mr. and Mrs.
David F. MacKenzie and
Cheri Lynn in Kincardine
on Sat., Dec. 16. Those
present were Dr. and
Mrs. Kenneth J.
MacKenzie of Listowel,
Mr and Mrs Donald R.
MacKenzie, Louise,
Janice, and Ian and
fiancee of Peterborough,
Mr and Mrs Lorne R.
MacKenzie, - Robbie,
Susan, and Heather of
Unionville:
On Saturday afternoon
at three Santa Claus in
red suit and bag of treats
arrived at the Ripley fire
hall and from there rode
down - to the Complex on
the fire truck' to meet the
.children there. With
truck lights flashing and
siren sounding and
Santa's loud "Ho Ho" and
Jingle Bells" heard for
blocks there was little
doubt that he had
arrived.
It was two nights in a
row for some of the
directors and officials of
the Ripley Agricultural
Society last week. On
Sunday evening they had
the Kincardine Com-
munity Singers Christ-
mas Concert in the Huron
Township hall. Then on
Monday evening, Dec. 11
it was the monthly
meeting of the Society.
President Jack Farrell
was in charge. Present
were Wes Smith, Robert
Osborne, Gloria
Rutledge, Janet and Jack
Farrell, Ray Fuller,
Keith' Van der Hoek,
Sheila MacDonald,
Morley ' Scott, and Ab
Wylds. The minutes
reports, and
correspondence, ware
presented.
The next meeting, one
week after New Year's
Day, Mon., Jan, 8 will be
the annual meeting for
ending 1978 and starting
the 1979 season. It is
called for eight in the
evening. Morley Scott
reported that he and Wes
Smith had made plans for
the annual Spring dance
which will be held on St.
Patrick's Day in the
evening in the auditorium
of the Ripley Huron
Community Complex
Centre with Glenn Boyd's
orchestra. Ray Fuller
and Sheila 'MacDonald
adjourned the meeting to
meet again Jan. 8.
On Friday evening Dec.
15 the fire whistle
sounded in Ripley around
ten calling the firemen to
the hall. A family living
on the baseline of Huron
township between the 8th
and 10th concessions had
returned from attending
the Christmas concert of
the Ripley Huron Central
School only to find their
home filled with smoke
from a smoldering fire.
Both the Ripley fire truck
and tank truck were out
and the firemen brought
things under control.
Among the , firemen out
were Chief . Ivan Cook,
Rod MacDonald, Johnny
Dodds, Ray Fuller, and
George McLean at the
hall. This is not a full list
of the names as the writer
has not got these at this
writing time.
There was a second fire
call for the Ripley
firemen last Thursday. It
was at supper time and
was a chimney fire on the
second farm east of
Olivet on the second
concession of Huron -
township --the former
Donald MacCharles
farm, then Herb -
Clayton's place, and then
the Sheppard family lived
there. The present
resident's name is not
known to the writer at
present. However the
good thing about. it was
the firemen were able to
put out the chimney fire
and save the home.
