SIGNIFICANCE OF REMEMBRANCE
BY LINDA MacDONALD
What would you say if I asked you, "Why do we Canadians
bother to set aside a day to remember? After all what do we
have to. remember? Would you say something like "I don't
know," or "Beats me?"
I believe that those answers would be quite common if they
were asked to the local teenagers,.
Now to answer my own questions. First of all, what or
whom do we have to remember? Well maybe you and I didn't
have anyone dear to us go to war and remain in "Flancers
Fields". But, look around you, look at your grandparents,
uncles and aunts. Were they robbed of the companionship of
their loved ones, e.g. parents, friends. Many members of the
Canadian population do remember that awful war that caused
grief to a great many innocent people.
• So why do Canadians bother to have Remembrance Day?
Remembrance Day is a day set aside to remember those men
and women who died in 'hope that no more blood would have
to be shed. They fought so that we could keep our freedom of
religion, freedom of speech and our democratic 'government.
They went to bring peace to all nations. We are not only
remembering the Canadians who gave their lives but also the
men and women of the United States, Russia, England and
other commonwealth countries, who fought with us in the
fight for peace for ever.
I think since millions and millions of lives were given for us,
we owe them more than just one day of respect for what they
did. They died just for us!
WHY I WEAR A POPPY
BY DONNA FREEMAN
Each day I grow to understand
That soldiers fought to save their land,
They left behind their families
And also left the memories.
These men were very brave and strong
And hoped the war would not be long.
They marched across the land, once free
Just to give us liberty.
They missed their families - Oh so bad!
And all the love that they once had.
The . only way their hearts would mend
Was when the war was at an end.
So 1 wear the poppy, bold and red
For all the blood that had been shed.
The birds will -gladly sing once 'more
In hopes of not another war.
