Fl
St. Joseph's School, Kingsbridge, has
received a $10,000 community school grant
from the Ministry of Education to further the
use of the school in the community.
The grant will help the school develop
further in recreational, cultural and educa-
tional activities. It will encourage frequent
access to the school and help ;the school meet
the needs of people in the community.
During the past year, the Kingsbridge
school has been reaching out into the
community, to draw people into the school.
An increase in community activities being
held at the school has resulted in the school
gym being used eight times a week for '
activities not related to the school day.
Volunteers from the community come into
the classroom to assist the teachers, which
has brought about the realization on the part
of the community members that working
with children in this setting is rewarding to
them and beneficial to the students, The
volunteers also point out that they never
knew teachers worked so. hard. No volun-
teers have quit since the program's initiation
and the number has risen from four to nine
who come into the -school to help.
This fall, a Playtimer,,for preschoolers was
started and the program, which is supervis-
ed by volunteers and mothers runs two
mornings a week and provides preschool
education for children who have no local
access to daycare or nursery school.
The grant money cannot be used to
purchase - equipment but wilt pay the salary
of a community school co-ordinator. Kings-
bridge principal, Dave Zyluk, sees the
co-ordinator as someone who will take the
school into the community. He/she could
work with, the Ashfield Township recreation
board to organize their recreation program.
The idea of a summer playground program
for children would provide summer activities
for children and employment for students
who would be hired to supervise, said Zyluk.
The co-ordinator could also help the
township re -organize the summer swimming
program they had several years ago. Zyluk
would also like to see the co-ordinator
promote ringette for girls because girls are
at a disadvantage, when it comes to ice time
pqn7 .eunpirm
during the winter season.
Zyluk said an instructor is prepared to
offer a course in 'belly dancing for ladies
physical fitness at the school in the spring.
He would also like to see displays of art from
ministry organizations brought into the
school for the public's viewing.
"These may be dreams at present," said
Zyluk but a year ago, the idea of a
community school grant for Kingsbridge was
just a dream". Zyluk -envisulizes a very
active grouping with the school at the centre
of the community activity.
Zyluk stressed that the programs are not
for Catholics alone. Children from non -cath-
olic families attend Playtime and he could

Reeve George Joynt told
Lucknow Village Council at
their inaugural meeting on
Tuesday, December 5, -that
he has applied for- 'an in-
crease inthe toad subsidy
allowance for road construc-
tion -in 1979.
Joynt said that in recent
years the village has been
plagued by payments on
bridges, and debentures 'that
will retire in„,1979. With
these expense g re 684,, he
said council could accelerate
their road program in 1979.
The village had applied for
a construction subsidy of
$25,200 which, is the sum we
have received . for several
years. - Joynt said he has
applied for.; an additional
$10,000 for 1979 which; When
matched With The '
share of $35,000, would
bring the 1979 road program
to approximately $70,000 to
be spent on construction of
roads in the village.
Joynt said, that the comple-,
don of the dental suite in
1978 was in expenditure
which will not be, laid out
again and the cost to Luck -
now was less, because the
cost is shared by the four
municipalities, who are serv-
ed by the Medical Centre.
