Reference was made to the O-P.S. M.T.F. publication Toys and Your Child. Christmas will soon be here. Once again, as a dedicated parent you will brave the human traffic jams and enter some of the fiercest jungles of life - the department stores. These stores, with their bright lights and hundreds of toys, will offer you one of your greatest challenges; namely the chore of buying -a toy for your child. While choosing the right toy may seem like a monumental task, it is possible to narrow your choice down by realizing a few basic facts. Although we often consider toys to be a mere pastime to "keep hits busy", we must be aware that they are much more. Toys are a child's tools for learning. The Ontario Public School Men Teachers' Federation suggests that "properly selected toys play a major productive role in the youngster's learning pro- cess". "...Aside from being aids to physical skills, toys can stimulate the creative side of a child's nature. They provide motivation to explore, experi- ment, ask questions and sometimes find answers". The surest way to choose a proper gift for your youngster is, quite simply, to know your child and his or her capabilities. Choosing a toy which is geared to your child's ability is very important.. Overwhelming thechild can lead to confusion and frustration. Anel remember, biggest is not always bests Choose a toy that is manageable in size,. As you shop, try to select a toy that will "grow" with your child as he or she grows physically and intellectually. Passive toys may be fine for the moment, but they are rapidly outgrown and their value is limited. Safety and durability of a toy is of the utmost importance. Can that beautiful' toy be trusted in baby's hands? "Remember, too, that safety can be taught. Any toy - as any object - can be a weapon when improperly used On Christmas Day, take a moment or two and show your child how to use the toy properly. WHAT TO CONSIDER The first two years of a child's life are the "discovery years". Size, shape, texture, and colour are what arouse curiosity. Choose toys which stimulate the senses, but be wary of toys which have parts which can come loose and be swallowed ordolls with wisps of hair that can irritate young eyes..-eep in mind, also, that children bite. Is that toy non-toxic? During these years your youngster grows physically. When hands are small and the child can't travel very far, WHY DEAL AT HULLY GULLY? As more mobility isacquired with age, movable objects and push - and -pull toys will become the order of the day. Children of ages three to six are in the "fantasy stage" and creative imagina- tion is very important. During this stage you may find your youngster reaching for dangerous objects to use for his or her role as doctor, nurse, fireman, or whatever. Therefore, there is a definite need for "reality toys" which serve as safe substitutes for the real thing. This stage is also a period bf bound- less energy (which you may wish you had in shopping for the gift). Toys which use up this energy are excellent ideas. Such things as skipping ropes will keep your angel hopping for days! Older children are naturally experi- mental. The variety of toys is almost endless here, but toys such as Scrabble, Monopoly and .other team games are good. bets. They also reinforce reading, word and mathematical skills. Beware of "self-contained" games that merely demand the child's presence.
