controls and Minnesota prohibits all for-
eign ownership.
In 1974 the government showed its
concern by impo4ing a 20 per cent land
transfer tax, but legal loopholes, such as
f• orming a Canadian company, allow a
buyer to -get .around the tax.
Derk Logtenburg,: president of the
Ashfield Federation of Agriculture, is also
in favour of controlling non-resident own-
ership. He lives on the seventh concession
of Ashfield and is surrounded by corporate
farms owned by non-resident investors. He
leases some of his land from a corporate
farm in the area.
He says that the problem of absentee
ownership of farmland in Ashfield cannot
e blamed entirely on corporate farming.
Farms have been getting bigger in the last
25 years as farmers buy more land to
increase the size of their farms, making

There will be no Lucknow
Christian School
before September of 1979
said Harry Burgsma on Tues-
day. Burgsma is a represent- •
ative of the Board of Trustee's
of the Lucknow Christian
District School Society who.
have purchased property for
a school on Highway 86
about 11/2 miles, east of the
village.
The board and interested
parents and supporters not the
school have been meeting
regularly for the past several
months,' to decide when it •
would be possible to begin
construction of the school.
It was decided at a meet-
ing Friday night that the cost
of building a school makes it
necessary to take more time
to raise the money to finance
the project.
Said Burgsma, the cost of
building the school is consid-
erable and it will beneces-
sary to spread the fund
raising out over .a longer
period of time.
The board will continue
meeting to decide when
construction will begin
farming with large expensive machinery
economical.
When a farmer decides to sell, he does
not want to break up his land into the
parcels of land it was, before the farmer
accumulated his acreage. Farmers want to
sell all their land to one buyer says
Logtenburg. It is almost impossible for
someone to buy up a 300 acre farm at one
time.
The land which belongs to corporate
farms in the area was on the market for
three or four years and no one locally was
interested, says Logtenburg. The first farm
sold to an absentee owner was ;Old about
seven years ago, ,
"It's going to take government legisla-
tion to control foreign non-resident owner-
ship in Ontario," says Logtenburg,
"There's got to be a basic agricultural
policy at home. Canadians cannot rely on
imports completely."
