President Harry Coiling had the privilege of having Deputy District Governor Lion Ted Heimpel from the Mit- chell. Club making his official visit. Regular business of the meeting included a lengthy discussion on preparations for the Beef on a Bun booth at the 1978 Plowing Match in Wingham and the Ripley Fall Fair. A motion was passed to purchase a set of hockey sweaters for recreation at a value of $300. The October meetings of the Lions Club were held on Oct, 11 and 25, 1978. The reports from the committees who organized the Beef on a Bun elite Plowing Match and Fall Fair stated that they were both a great success. Thanks to all for your support. At the Oct. 25 meeting, Ron Finlay, District Governor of A9 froth Orangeville, made his official visit. Ron is a former resident of Huron Township and well known by all. Governor Ron's address dealt with the District's project "Help the handicapped help themselves", -Mr, and Mrs. Oliver McCharles were on hand to make a presentation of a donation to president Harry Coiling thanking him and member Lions for their help during the Craft Festival held in Ripley each year. On Hallowe'en night the Lions had candy for the children at the Township Hall. The last minute details were worked out for the District A9 Cabinet meeting to be held in Ripley on Sunday, Nov, 5. Members from 32 clubs in the district will be at- tending. A donation of $400 was given toward the pur- chase of a van truck for the Physically Han- dicappped in Grey -Bruce area. A $100 donation was sent to the Lions Summer Camp for the Blind at Lake St. Joseph. Also a $100 donation to the Leader Dog. The Lions will be canvassing for the C.N.LB, on Nov. 6 and 7. The Lions helped in the support of the Beavers. Ripley District School News SECONDARY SCHOOL - NEWS PRESS REPORTERS: ANN COURTNEY MARY KEMPTON COMMENCEMENT 1 The commencement exer- cises took place on Friday, October 27th at 8.00 p.m. It was a success this year with a fairly large group of people in attendance. To start off the exercises, Rev. H. Nugent gave the dedication. The School Spirit Trophy for this year was given to Heather Boyle who has been very active in Students'. Council and every- thing else in the previous years: Chris McGarvey was honoured with the Ripley Women's Institute,piize, the Carter Scholarship, the Prin- cipal's Award for Outstand- ing Scholastic Achievement, the Senior School Letter, Athletic Letter, an Ontario Scholarship, the Albert Wylds Scholarship and a. subject award in Science. We, at our school feel privileged to have had Chris attending our school and wish him well in the future. The same congratulations to. Cheryl McGarvey who was awarded with her Senior School Letter and Athletic. Letter, an Ontario Scholar- ship, the Donald and Irene MacKenzie Scholarship, the Albert Wylds Scholarship, and subject award in French. Cheryl was also the Valedic- torian for this year. Much luck goes to Cheryl in her future. The Secondary School Graduation diplomas were given to the following: Randy Ackert, Rick Clampitt, Brian Coiling, John Drzazga, Peter Eby, Robert Elliott, Nadine Foulds, Glenn Grubb, Denise Huber, Donna Huber, Mark Humphrey, Jean Huston, Marlene Huston, David Lin- de, Robbie Lowry, Erroll Lundy, Jane Messenger, Joyce Osborne, Tim Palmer, Jocelyne Poirier, Keith Pol- lock, Mike Pollock, Robert Regier, Greg Rouse, Mike Rowland, Bev Scott, Robbie Sutton and Debbie Zipfel. The Sub. Lieut. John A. MacLeod Memorial Prize was awarded to Wendy Ham- ilton. The, School Letters were presented as follows: Activ- ity, Donna Huber, Marilyn Stewart, Debbie Zipfel; Ath- letic, (Interschool), Ann Courtney, Shelly Hackett, Karen McGarvey, Mary Margaret Smith, Rick Clain- pitt; Athletic, (Intramural), Denise Huber, Cheryl Mc- Garvey, Chris " McGarvey, Robert Regier; Scholastic, Heather Boyd, Ruth Clully, Ann Drzazga, Karen McGar- vey; Senior school letters, Cheryl McGarvey, Chris Mc- Garvey. The W. Turvill Progress Award goes every year to the students who have shown a remarkable increase in their averages from one year to another. The deserving stud- ents this year were Bill Creech and Marilyn Stewart. Ontario Scholarships were won by Wendy Hamilton, Cheryl McGarvey and Chris McGarvey. This year's winners of the Donald and Irene MacKenzie Scholarship were Robbie Sut tan and Cheryl McGarvey. The Student Council pro- ficiency Awards were pres- ented as follows: Grade 9, Lorie Peterbaugh, Margaret Nugent, Debbie Lowry, Mike Lamb, Nancy MacDonald. Grade 10, Joan Osborne, Tom Wilson, Brian McGuire, Adrian Korten. Grade 11, Ann Drzazga, Karen McGar- vey, Ruth Cluley, Heather Boyd. Grade 12, Glenn Grubb, Denise Huber, Don- na Huber, Mike Pollock. Those receiving Secondary School Honour Graduation Diplomas were Heather Boyle, Laurie Gallant, Donna Elphick, Kevin Ferguson, Donna Gallant, Wendy Ham- ilton, Pauline Lowry, Cheryl McGarvey, Christ McGar- vey, Jeff Rouse and Robbie Sutton.
