Wseiesdqv, 000bor 0;1 0 Soaring energy prices have investigated a revival of the wood stove to supplement the oil or gas furnace and eut the cost of heating homes during the Canadian winter. More than just a rustic revival, the wood stove can be energy efficient and can drastically cut the cost of heating your home for the winter. The Scandinavians are credited with the most important recent change in the design of wood. stoves - airtight construction that makes it possible to adjust the air intake and control the rate of combustion. Allan and Nancy Gibson, concession 12, Ashfield, are going into the second winter with their airtight Lakewood stepstove that sits in the dining room off their pantry. • Last winter the stove cut their. cost for fuel for the winter by a "good half" and reduced their electricity bill because the furnace was not coming on as often, Allan guesses they used about 10 cord of wood last winter 'whereas the old wood cook stove would have burned twice as much. A stick burning when the family went to bed at night would still be burning when they got up in the morning. The only problem the Gibsons have found with their airtight wood stove is the problem with creosote which is common to all wood stoves. Deposits of corrosive and inflammable creosote in the stovepipe and chimney are formed by a "tar fog" of volatile resins and other chemicals given off by the burning New..Di+wash'er wood', All woods produce these tar -like vapors when they burn. Normally the inflammable gases are either burned in the stove or driven off with the hot flue gases, but if the fire is burning slowly and producing a lot of smoke, and the chimney is cool, they will condense inside it as a dark brown, acrid liquid that dries to form a - hard, shiny, inflammable deposit of creoSote. This is what burns when a chimney catches fire. Unfortunately, the well-built, efficient, airtight stoves are the ones most likely to produce creosote if they are not used properly. • To prevent creosote buildup an active fire with a good bed of hot coals should be maintained most of the time the stove is in use. If the draft is clbsed to check the fire, it should be opened every couple of hours to get the fire going briskly .again and to keep the chimney warm. Banking the fire over- night is not a good .idea. It would be better Help your Heart... The first stage of burning is drying when the moist* is driven off and.the vales should be open during this stage. Green wood also requires more draft and, creates more creosote -than ,dry wood, J. D, Durnin, R, 2 Lucknow, is a local dealer for Lakewood stoves. He has been selling them from his farm since the beginning of September. The stoves are made in Bobcaygen by the same company that made Gibson's stove and Durnin can offer a choice among • the five designs, stepstove, cottager, space mate, double door and workhorse. • Lakewood is working on a design of stove to work as a furnace and they are having their models tested by the Canadian Safety Association so they will be CSA approved. • Many of the wood stove and wood furnace companies which fell by the wayside when oil and gas furnaces first became the modern method of centrally heating homes are now re -opening for operation and are again doing business. Home. Hardware and the Co-op sell airtight stoves, The comeback of the wood stove would appear to be more than a rustic fantasy. The airtight stove is an efficient method of heating a house and can be cheaper than oil or gas. MONTH END 1. ..atirdt;,..0010 e>' • • .
