Aubrey's Observations
Yes, a number of us got to go to the
Plowing Match, and I, expect we saw
more of the complete display than a
great number who spent the entire day
there, battling their way through the
crowd.
We left in our own small bus, from
which there is a good view no matter
where seated, and having our Mrs.
Clarke behind the wheel, (she is an
excellent driver) we were able to cover
every part of the tented city.
As we left right after breakfast, there
were very few people there before we
had covered up one aisle and down
parkways that we would not have had
the privilege of later in the day, and it
was so much easier for the driver.
I was amazed at the size of some of
those tractors, and the width of the
implements that they were able to draw.
Then I spotted a couple of old, black,
dirty, clumsy looking steam tractors
that were rated at twenty-one horse
power. My fingers itched to put one
hand on the throttle and the other on the
steering wheel and show some of those
gas tractors what could be done with
one of them. ,
If they, got in softground and sank
down, it was a simple matter to have
them lift themselves out, and with a
couple of fence rails, away you went
again, and their power seemed to know
no limit.
I wonder with the amount of wood
that is being left to rot, if they would not
be a big help in the energy crisis.
There is a possibility of me letting
myself get carried away on the
steamengine, because a man took me to
London, when I was about eighteen,
and he bought a complete new
threshing outfit.
On the way home he said, "that
engine is yours to operate, take good
care of it."
By the time we arrived home, I
believe I had grown at least three inches
in mind, and convinced that he would
never regret those words.

- Of course this is sentimental writing
on my part, but
In reality with so many farms with a
wood lot and a few moderations, such as
rubber tires, I am of a firm conviction I
could do as much work in a given time
as can be done with one df those new
four wheel drive tractors at much less
the overall cost.
Well, I have written much on pro-
gress and still believe that it is the
foundation of our country and that now
we are threatened with a shortage of
energy.
I believe, it is the duty of all of us to
use what was given to us freely.
Why waste what our forefathers had
