The tower •was badly deteriorated and It was feared it might fall and hurt someone. The bell from the tower is to be restored because of its memorial value. Although It is • •worth a considerable amount, it will not be sold because the • names of the church members who died in the first world war are inscribed on the ben. The solid brass bell measures approxiniately three feet across the bottom and the sides are three inches thick. The revision to the August minutes and the September minutes were read and adopted on motion of Coun- cillors 'Foran and Hickey. Two trustees from Auburn attended and questioned Council about taxes, road work in Auburn, and the municipal audit as far as it concerns Auburn. Mr. Wm. Shetler was in attendance and submitted to Council a bill for his costs for an entrance culvert installed in connection with drainage he had undertaken on his far Mr Wm. Beyersbergen questioned Council about a road culvert which had settled in the centre, allow- ing each end to turn up, and therefore is hindering the passage of water along the ditch on his farm. "The road superintendent informed Mr. Byersbergen that he would inspect the culvert before the end of the week. The Clerk was directed to write the owners of the Reid Drain, requegting their at- tendance at a meeting on Tuesday, October 10th, to discuss the repair and im- provement of the closed portion of the drain. On motion of Councillors Hickey and Stothers, Build- ing Permits were authorized for: A. Jakobsen (barn); G. Smyth (addition to shop); T. Lawlor (house addition); N. Stutzman (implement shed); J. D. Durnin (mobile home); G. Dobie (house addition); N. Rintoul (implement shed); D. Sproul (silo); R. Jefferson (steel granary); L. Phillips (implement shed). Motion by Councillors For- an and Hickey "That by-law #11, 1978 be given third reading and finally passed. This by-law authorizes the borrowing of sufficient funds to complete the construction of the Smyth Municipal Drain Extension and Im- provement until the , assess- ments can be levied •and collected. Correspondence from Gamsby and Mannerow re- quested Council 'to authorize payment of an extra $500.00 to Brickman Tile Drainage for the Kirk Municipal Drain Repair and Improvement. Council sustained a motion of last month to allow $400.00 extra to Brickman. An application for Loan for tile drainage on lot 20, concession 9 was accepted by Council on motion of Council- lors Hickey and Stothers. Motion by Councillors For- an and Hickey "That the Clerk is hereby authorized to apply for an advance of $20,000.00 for the Ontario Home Renewal Program from the Ministry of Hous- ing". Council members decided to call a Ratepayers meeting for Tuesday, October 17, 1978 at the T6wnship Hall. Motion by Councillors Cranston and Hickey "That the Township Officials be authorized to apply to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for the Interim Subsidy on Road Expenditures to 31 August 1978 in the amount of - $139,085.72." By-law #12, 1978 was given third reading and finally passed on motionof Councillors Hickey and For- an. This by-law authorizes the imposition of a special rate on two properties in the municipality to cover tile drainage loans. Cancer Society plans. Chinese Cooking school Members of the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society met on Thurs- day afternoon to discuss plans for the upcoming events being sponsored by the group. A Chinese Cooking School is to be held on October 26 at 8.00 p.m. at the Lucknow Community Centre. Tickets have been distributed to members of the group for , sale or they may be obtained at the door that evening. Proceeds of this project are designated for - Cancer re- search. The following week on November 2 at 8.00 p.m. at the Lucknow Public School auditorium, the Lucknow branch of the Cancer Society is, sponsoring a Cancer Forum. Mr. Bill O'Connor, field secretary of the Ontario Division of the Cancer Soci- ety, was present on Thursday to outline the program which includes films for men, women and teenagers. Fol- lowing the films, Dr. T. A. Watson, head of the London Cancer Clinic, and one of our local doctors will answer written or oral questions from the audience arising from the films and any other questions pertaining to the disease itself. There is no admission charge to the forum. Coffee will be served at the conclusion of both events.
