The congregation of Ashfield Presbyterian Church gathered after the service on Sunday, July 16 to honour Mrs. Lillian Simpson, centre, for 25 years as faithful dedicated organist and choir leader until her retirement in December, 1977. Present and former members of the congregation enjoyed a short musical program and a buffet dinner during the afternoon. Observe Christian education Sunday The Sunday School took part in the service on Sun. Sept. 10 at Lucknow Presbyterian Church to begin another season in the education of its members. Suzanne Kirkland and Charlene Elphick opened the service followed by an interesting talk by Mrs. James Henderson. Marlene Murray, Janice McInnis and Reid Murray had scripture readings. Dale Gilchrist led in a prayer and of- fering was taken by Rob Henderson, Murray Gilchrist, Glen, Raynard and Reid Murray. Robert MacKenzie explained the system of awards and Rev. Wm. Munshow and 'June Gilchrist gave awards for attendance in the past year. There were nine people with perfect attendance: Jackie and Dianne Wilson, Danny and Dale Gilchrist, Mae, Glen and Marion Raynard, Reid Murray and Wray Forster. U.C.W. hold September meetings U.C.W. UNIT 1 Unit one of the Lucknow U.C.W. held their Septem- ber meeting at the home of Mrs. Thomas Hackett. Mrs. Isabel Havens read a poem to open the meeting. Mrs. Ruth Mathers con- 'ened the program on Friendship and spoke of the friendliness of the Lucknow people. The scripture reading and meditation on "Sharing" and prayer, was given by Mrs. Freda Button. A piano selection was given by Mrs. Edith Webster. Two poems were read by Mrs. Jean McLeod,. A splendid paper on kind- ness wasgiven by Mrs. Al Irwin. Mrs. Mathers'read. two poems and closed with vraver. Following the business, an invitation to all UCW mem- bers from the manse to an informal tea on September 20 from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. was read. Mrs. Shirley Bolt gave the financial report and Mrs. Mathers read a poem on school day§. Mrs. Button reported that Mrs. Al Irwin had completed two church ' quilts and had helped with the tying of another. Mrs. Edith Webster read some of the church modera- tor's thoughts on church union talks. Mrs. Havens read a stewardship paper prepared by Mrs. Edna MacDonald. A recent resident of the Caribbean Islands, and now a resident of Ashfield Town- ship would appreciate good used long sleeved shirts or dresses which she sends to the Islands. Mrs. Anna Mae Hunter reported that the two new C.G.I.T. leaders are Mary Lynn Cayley and Laurie Clark. The meeting closed with lunch. U.C.W. UNIT 2 The September meeting of the UCW Unit 2 was held at the home of Mrs. Greta Johnston. Mrs. Grace Gibson welcomed everyone back after the summer holiday and opened the meeting with a poem. The treasurer's report was given by Mrs. Andrew Rit- chie. The collection was 'taken by Mrs. Ritchie and dedicated by Mrs. Gibson. Miss Ada Webster report- ed on. Cummunity Friend- ship. Mrs. Drennan reported on Citizenship and Social Action. The general meeting will be held on September 21. Mrs. Kirkland'reported on Christian Education and pre- sided for the program. Houston. U.C.W., UNIT # 3 Unit # 3 of the U.C.W. met at the home of Mrs. Wilbur Brown for their September meeting. Mrs. Cook opened with a poem on life. Mrs. Jardine gave the treasurer's report. The collection was taken and an offertory prayer given by Mrs., Cook. For Community Friend- ship report everyone report- ed on their visits to the hospital or Pinecrest Nursing Home during the summer. Reports were given by Mrs. Wraith for Supply and Wel- fare and Mrs. Bob Irwin for Christian Education. Mrs. Cliff Menary was in charge of the devotions and she opened with a poem. She was thanked and presented with a small gift. Mrs. Cook thanked the hostess, and the meeting closed with prayer. The com- mittee in charge served a tasty lunch and a social time was enjoyed over a cup of tea. LUCK NO Mrs. Austin Loree presided for the Sep- tember meeting of the W.M.S. in the Presbyterian Church, Lucknow, reading the scripture followed by prayer. Mrs. Mowbray gave the meditation and Mrs. Loree followed with a poem. The minutes were read and correspondence. consisted of thank you notes. Announcement was made of a pot luck sup- per this month and a workshop in Teeswater. Mrs. Porteous will receive used clothing for the bale which can be left in the church basement. AUGUSTINE The September meeting of the St. Augustine C.W.L. waS held Tuesday, September 5 in the Parish Hall. The meeting opened with Father Dentinger leading in prayer. The president, Mrs. Boyle, welcomed everyone present. TRINITY U.C.W. The September meeting of Trinity U.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. Herb Wilkins, on September 7. Scripture was read by Mrs. Greg Blake and the medita- tion was given by Mrs. Marvin Scott. Mrs. Blake then read a poem. The president, Mrs. Donald Hackett, thanked the host- ess. Mrs. Charles Wilkins gave the Bible Study, on the story of the Talents. The business followed: everyone was reminded to keep in touch with their Sunshine Pals. Mrs. Cook introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Ken Laidlaw, who showed slides and spoke on .the "Cayman Islands", which was very much enjoyed by all. Mrs. Chester Hackett thanked the speaker. The meeting closed and a social hour was enjoyed by all W W.M.S. A.W.M.S. Board meeting will be held this month at the church. A motionwas passed to contribute $.100. toward refurbishing the washroom in.the church. Following the offering, Mrs. Loree made the offertory prayer. Mrs. Rutherford favoured with a piano solo. Mrs. Brooks gave the Glad Tidings review and Mrs. Laidlaw gave the Mission Study, an in-. for'rnative talk on the Caribbean Churches and the history of change for the Caribbean people from slavery to in- dependence. The St. Augustine ladies thanked the Kingsbridge ladies for catering at the anniversary. The president thanked the St. Augustine ladies for catering at the Gibson funeral. Father Dentinger and Mrs. Boyle gav readings. The meeting adjourned and lunch was served by the hostess.. SOUTH KINLOSS W.M.S. The September meeting of South Kinloss W.M.S. was held at the home of Mrs. Evan Keith. The President Mrs. Philip Steer presided, opening the meeting by reading a psalm. The October meeting will be a special meeting, with Miss Betty Colwell showing her slides and telling of her experiences in Africa. A workshop will be held in Teeswater. Bonnie Clarke who attended C.G.I.T. Camp Council told of her ex- periences and fellowship with 80 C.G.I.T. girls attending the Camp Council. Mrs. Alvin Schmidt took the Bible Study on Noah, a direct descen- dent from Adam. - Mrs. Frank MacKenzie, Mrs. Harold Howald, Mrs. Fraser MacKinnon took part in the Prayer Circle. The Study Book topic, "Mission Education" was by Mrs. Leonard Clarke. Music and' singing by Laurie and Bonnie Clarke was enjoyed. . The Offertory Prayer was by Mrs. Ted Collyer. Courtesies were given by Mrs. Alvin Schmidt. The Closing Prayer was by Mrs. Ira Dickie. A social half-hour followed served by the hostess and directors, Mrs. Leonard Clarke and Mrs. Alvin Schmidt. Correction The Lucknow Agricultural Society informed the Sentinel this week that their cheque, presented to the Lucknow District Community Centre building fund, totalled $1,534 not $1,500 as stated in last week's correction. The proceeds from the draw at the Craft Festival were $767 not $750.
