Ribbon cutting ceremony opens Lucknot District Community Centre

'Lucknow Tractor Pullers Association to Walter Arnold,
chairman of, the finance committee for the Lucknow
Community Centre at the Centre's official opening on
Saturday afternoon. The Centre, which will cost about
$275,000, has been called, "the biggest project the

The meeting room in the community centre can seat a capacity of 60 people and can be
rented for meetings and banquets separate from the dance hall.
The kitchen Is situated so it can cater to the meeting,banquet room, or the dance hall mid has
access to the bar. It is equipped with a ten burner propane stove which has two large ovens, a
refrigerator, deep freeze, and plenty of cupboard space and work area, A 60 square foot
cooler is pliumetl for installation between the bar aid kitchen; for use by both areas

marked the official opening of the new Lucknow and
District Community Centre. Built at a cost of $275,000,
it has been called the "biggest project this community
has ever taken on".
The concept of a Lucknow Community Centre Wbs
initiated by the local Lions Club who also spearheaded -
the fund raising drive. Funds were raised through a
weekly $1,000 lottery draw, which netted approximate-
ly $80,000, as well as around $22,000 in donations.
Another $9,600 was presented to the centre's finance
chairman, Walter Arnold at the opening from the
Lucknow Tractor Pullers Association who turned over
the proceeds from a Tractor Pull they held in Ludknow
in Jtily.
On hand for the opening were Murray Gaunt, Liberal
MPP; Bob McKinley, Conservative MP; Barry
Johnston, Reeve of Kinloss; Warren Zinn, Reeve of
Ashfield; George Joynt, Reeve of Lucknow; and
Councillor Marybelle Cranston, who represented Bob
Lyons, Reeve of West Wawanosh.
The ribbon was cut by Stu Reavie, chdirman of the
building committee for the centre, assisted by Walter
Arnold, chairman of finance committee and Barry
McDonagh, treasurer of the Community Centre. •Joe
Agnew, president of the Lucknow Lions Club; Angus
MacDonald, representing the Lucknow Legion; Bill
Hunter, chairman of the Lucknow Recreation
Committee, and master of ceremonies; Barry Hackett,
president of the Lucknow Kinsmen and Russell Irwin,
president of the Lucknow Agricultural Society also took
part in the opening ceremony.
Entertainment was provided by the Lucknow Concert
Band during the ceremony and the .building was open to
the public for viewing. By Special Appointment
provided the music free of charge for the dance in the
evening.
Etaseball games were played at Caledonian Park in
the afternoon featuring four teams from the recreation
league in the area, Westfield, Dungannon, Lucknow
and North Ashfield.
There was free swimming all day at the Lucknow
Swimming Pool and a food booth on the grounds.

The dance hall is licenced for 400 persons and features a parquet floor fol. dancin

The. Lucknow Lions Club *will maintain responsibility
for the centre until the debt is cleared, and then they
will turn the centre over to the village.
The project is subject to Wintario and Community
Centre gtants. Treasurer Barry McDonagh said
Monday that if the committee had already received
these two grants, the debt would amount to $21,000.
The Wintario grant is due to arrive any day and the
community centre grant will be received sometime next
year because of the waiting list ahead of the Lucknow
project.
Construction of the centre was 'handled by D H & L
Contractors, Milton. The centre has complete kitchen
facilities, a meeting room that will accommodate 60
people and a major dance hall that is licenced for 400
persons. The centre is air conditioned and a new sound
system has been installed.
