Three area homes which utilize alternative forms of
energy and energy conservation ,measures were open
Friday to a sneak preview of the Energy Alternatives
Tour. The MeQuail home, Lucknow; the Mitchell home,
Clinton and the Zurbrigg home in Goderich are three of
the homes in Huron County which will be featured in
the tour, sponsored by the Lucknow/Goderich Energy
Conservation Centre.
The tours, in co-operation with the Huron Alternate
Energy and Lifestyle Group and CANTDU, will be held
between 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on Saturday,
September 9. Tickets are available from the ECC office
on Campbell Street, Lucknow.
"The purpose of this tour is to help people learn
about how solar energy, wind power, wood heating and
energy conservation are being used now in actual
homes in Huron County," explained Donna Hazelden
of the planning committee.
It is hoped that by having a number of homes open
which demonstrate energy conserving devices, solar
heaters, woodstoves, windmills, heat pumps etc. the
public will have a better understanding of real working
or developing systems rather than models or
demonstrations.
The McQuails have built a passive solar home with a
greenhouse that they hope will provide a tropical -like
green space in the midst of -' a white winter. Tony
McQuail feels that this will help halt that urge to fly
south during the bad weather. A water pumping
windmill supplies water to the house and barn. They
hope to have a wind generator shortly. The McQuails
use an ashley wood heating system as a back up to their
passive solar design. They feel that their yearly energy
bill is less than $100.
The Mitchells, Clinton, live in a 107 year old stone
school house which they purchased in 1971. From 1972
to 1975; the Mitchells insulated their home and
installed a franklin style wood stove (a style which they
feel is inefficient and have recently replaced) and they
found that their oil consumption was reduced by almost
50%. This year they hope to reduce their oil
consumption even further - to below 200 gallons - with
the installation of their air tight steel, stove.
Harry Mitchell has also harnessed the sun's power
with a small roof mounted collector for heating his
domestic water. The collector was homemade from a
copper sheet with 1/2'; copper tubing and is insulated
with 2" styrofoam. A recycled storm window was used
to cover the, collector. The cost of this homebuilt
collector and water heating system was well below
$300. As Mr. Mitchell explained, "There's no need for
solar energy to be expensiveor technically difficult. It's
so simple and I would like everyone to realize that."
The third home that was on display is that of the
Zurbriggs in Goderich. This brand new home was built
to utilize the sun as well as using energy conserving
devices in its construction. It was constructed with 2 x
6" studs with R20 insulation in the walls and R40 in the
ceiling. Their kitchen is large, bright and airy. It
combines the new with old. Gerry Zurbrigg uses an
energy conserving style microwave oven and hopes to
have the woodstove, built in 1929, hooked and
functional very shortley.
Three very different homes but each utilizes
conservation measures and alternate energy. They are
building a conserver society. The homes were a
sampling of the fifteen homes that will be featured in
this novel type of tour.
