College Bean Day:
August 22 in Ontario Bean
Day at the Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology
(CCAT), located 40 kilomet-
res north of London.
It's the first time the
college has sponsored a bean
program, and Jim O'Toole of
the CCAT crops department
expects more than 200 bean
growers and industry repres-
entatives to attend.
"The program will show
the farm public and the bean
industry the bean research
work under way at the
college."
Most of the program deals
with edible beans, primarily
white beans and kidney.
beans. However, soybeans
will be discussed as analter-
native crop.
Tours of the research plots
are scheduled from 10 to 12
a.m. and from, 1.30 to 3.30
p.m. Visitors will see disease
and weed control test plots,
and new varieties of white
beans and early soybeans.
Other plots will demonstrate
the effects of ozone, planting
dates and crop rotation.
Research personnel, from
CCAt, Ridgetown College of
Agricultural Technology, and
the Soils and Crops Branch of
the • Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, will be .
available to, answer ques-
tions. Plant breeders from
the University of Guelph will
also be present.
During the lunch hour, a
representative of the Ontario
Bean Producers' Marketing
Board will discuss the 1978
market outlook, and growers
can ' also watch an aerial
spray application demonstra-
tion.
"Aerial spraying has not
been practiced widely in the
bean industry," says Mr.
O'Toole. "It ha's been used
in emergencies but it may
have greater potential for
insect and disease control."
Several farm equipment
manufacturers plan to dis-
play equipment, at the col-
lege. The new dryer wagon,
rotary bean cutter, and roller
herbicide applicator, which
have attracted a great deal of
attention recently, will be

part of the display.

The Farm Income Stabili-
zation Commission of Ont-
ario has announced a support
price of $2,38 per bushel for
corn sold in the crop year
September 1, 1977 to August
31, 1978.
The Ontario support price
is based on 95 per cent of the
average market prices for the
previous five years, plus an
adjustment for cash produc-
tion costs. Establishment of
the Ontario price follows a
recent announcement by the
federal government of a
$2.26 per bushel support
level under the federal plan.
The average market price
for the 1977 crop year will not
be determined until the
middle of September. If that
price is less than $2.26,
however, producers enrolled
in the Ontario plan can
expect a net payment of at
least eight cents per bushel.
The Ontario plan is funded
one-third by producers and
two-thirds by he Ontario
government. The producer's
share will be deducted from
the payment. More than
11,500 cortrp'roducers enrol-
led in the 1977 'Ontario corn
plan.
Claims forms for the 1977
crop year will be mailed to
participating producers.
Forms must be filled out and
returned with receipts at-
tached for payment to be
made.
