Graft festival
Being that everything happens on a
weekend, I do not have time to have my
few lines published in the next weeks
paper so I am always a week late with
my remarks. I do want to comment on
the craft festival which I attended on
Friday afternoon. My sister and a
friend, both from London, Ontario, had
a stall displaying ,all sorts of hand
crafted articles including pillow slips to
full-sized quilts.
I did not have much of a visit as my
sister seemed to be explaining different
stitches or whatever they are called to
so many people, that I got the
impression that they would go home
and try and do the different things
themselves. I asked my sister at
four -thirty about business. She told me.,
they were very satisified at that time. So
people were not only asking questions,
they were also spending money for
articles they wanted. In taking my time
and walking around, I could not help but
observe that. this was what was happen-
ing at the other stalls. In this way, I
could not help but feel that the entire
festival was a complete success, and a
very interesting way to spend a few
hours.
I think that each stall was displaying a
hand -made article of some kind, from
expensive jewellery all the way to maple
syrup. A great number of these
exhibitors were quite willing to demon-
strate what they do with their exper-
ience. There are many older people who
still have full use of their natural ability
but do not have the strength to do hard
labour, and could take up some of these
crafts just to fill their days instead of
sitting around feeling sorry for them-
selves.
I also enjoyed the delicious beef
dinner. That must have been Lucknow.
.
beef. It was so tender, juicy, and looked
just right; and everything with it. The
meal was topped off with a large piece
of cake. That is something which I'm
not supposed to have and possibly that
is why it looked so good!!! The craft
festival was sponsored by the Agricul-
tural Society.
The new community centre was built
by another group.
The Co-op is building outside the
incorporated village and Silverwoods
has gone, leaving empty buildings. Is
our town council not supposed to have
any other function than the mainten-
ance of our streets??? In some ways it -
seems to me that they should be the
promoters of new ideas and be working
for a larger, more progressive Lucknow.
In the business district, if I have said it
before I will say it again, I believe there
is business in this district for four more
new car dealerships in this town.
It would be considerable foresight
and a lot of hard work, but why not sell
new cars here instead of driving many
miles to get what the public are buying
in all the small towns around us?
This is not an idle statement and were
I twenty-five years younger I could
prove that in one year's time I could be
receiving substantial returns on my
investment.
But it cannot be done in an eight hour
day unless a man has the will power,
and determination to make a success of
the undertaking.
Possibly a little help on taxes for a
start and the people of the surrounding
district would find they can buy at home
without having to drive all over the
countryside to get what they want.
Yes, I believe in progress, not waiting
for the other fellow to do it for me.
