AUG. 17th Ripley community news BY AB WYLDS The Summer Playground carnival staged by the boys and girls under the supervi- sion of their leaders, Barb Grubb, Marilyn Stewart and Anne Farrell, was rained out last Wednesday, the date originally scheduled but was held on Thursday, August 10 in Gord Park under bright sunny skies and summery conditions. The children were most eager in their co-operation in building and setting up their different booths. They built those the week before and stored them away in a nearby garage. The leaders placed the proceeds over sixty dollars. It seems each day now that they have another event. On Friday afternoon they had a ball game down in the Memorial Ball Park with their mothers as the opposing team. This week leaders Barb, Marilyn, and Anne have a chicken dinner on the plans. The news of Paul Wald- en's untimely accidental death last Friday has shock- ed the entire community. Paul was electrocuted while working on hydro lines in the Neustadt area. The funeral was held on Monday after- noon at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley. In his 28th year, Paul leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and two young sons, Jason and Jeff, at their home in Walkerton. And here at Pine River he leaves his parents, Leroy and 'Mary Walden and brother Jamie. Not so many years ago he attended Ripley District High School where he was a likeable boy, always eager to help.. Everyone here feels a deep inner sadness on this occasion. Only a few short years back his older brother, Johnny, passed away due to a traffic accident. It is unbelievable that such trag- edy should fall on a family. Sympathy goes to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Schmidt of Walkerton on the sudden passing of their grandson,.. Barry Fischer, this past weekend. In this column on July 26 there was a news item on Richard Hunter of Willow - dale and Ron, Ray of Don Mills making a special trip into Ripley to express their appreciation of this column. At that time they and their families were at Bruce Beach. Well the next week Ron Ray was driving home when he became very ill, motoring down Highway 86 near Listowel. He got to Listowel Hospital with "an apparent heart attack" but found it to be a bad case of pleurisy pneumonia. Then he was transferred to North York Hospital nearer home for treatment. While in hospital his wife Cathy brought him a copy of the paper. Word was recently received from his friend Dick Hunter and it is hoped that by this time that Ron is on the road to recovery. Dick and Ron, both graduates of Western University, are two friends to this rural area from Metro Toronto. Well this past week was a hard week on news writers in this area. On Tuesday, August. 8, Mrs. June Elliott of concession 10 east in Huron, -who wrote last week's Purple Grove news, entered St. Joseph's Hos- pital, London. Then on Thursday, my wife, Fran, who helps with this column, also entered St. Joe's. So the column may be shortened for a while. On Friday evening, Aug- ust 4, Miss Kerry Hodgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hodgins of Ripley and Mr. Wallace Houston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey' Houston of Lucknow and formerly of Holyrood, were married. The . marriage cere- mony was held in . St. Peter's Anglican Church, Lucknow, with the minister of the church, Rev. Garratt, off ci- ating.
