A rough draft of the Lucknow Flood Plain Map and
hydrology report was presented to Village Council at their
regular meeting on" August 8. Ian Deslauriers, Resources
Manager for the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority,
Gorrie, made the presentation. David Gower, vice-chairman
of the Authority also attended the meeting.
The final draft of the Flood Plain Map and Remedial
Measures for Lueknow, will be presented to Council at the
Tractor overturns -
catches fire
Cliff Johnston, R. R. 3 Holyrood, was taken to hospital and
treated for injuries Saturday after the tractor he was driving
overturned and caught fire.
Johnston was pulling a load of grain 1 km. west of Holyrood
on the 8th concession when the tractor overturned spilling
grain and gasoline on the road.
The Lucknow fire department was called to the scene at
approximately 7.30 p.m." and brought the fire under control.
Fire Chief George Whitby reported that the tractor was badly
damaged. Most of the grain that spilled onto the road was
immediately loaded onto trucks.

completing the study which will make recommendations to
Council ..for solving existing flood problems and the costs
involved.
Council indicated to Deslaurier that they consider the area
north of the Campbell Street bridge on the Lucknow River to
the Wheeler Street bridge and the area south of the main
street bridge to the Willoughby Street bridge to be the top
priority.
Once the final report is made, Council can make a
submission to the Authority indicating their top priority and
asking that this problem be approved as a project. Maitland
Valley will then get approval from the Ministry of Natural
Resources and the project will be funded 85 per cent by the
Ministry and 15 per cent by' the municipality.
Triton Engineering will suggest in their Remedial
Measures part of the study, what should be done to solve the
flooding problem; whether dyking, dredging or both will be
required.
The Ministry of Natural Resources strikes, their 1979
budget for flood projects in October and Council wants to
have their submission approved in time to get their project
onto the 1979 budget. Council asked that representatives of
the Maitland Authority and Ministry of Natural Resources
attend the September Council meeting so that council can
review the final study and recommendations to make a

The purpose of flood plain mapping is to be a resource for
developers, planners and engineers. On such a map, land
usage can be calculated, and the effects of land use changes'
determined. It can assist developers and municipal planners
in deciding whether it is economical to allow development in a
certain area and also help to solve existing flood problems.
'Walkerton man
electrocuted Friday
Paul Walden, 27, of Young Street, Walkerton was killed
Friday while installing power lines 'in a Carrick Township
home.
Walden, an Ontario Hydro employee was working on a
hydro pole on Concl Sion 11 south of Walkerton when he was
electrocuted. A coroners inquest is likely to be held.
Mr. Walden is survived by his wife and two sons of
Walkerton. He is also survived by his parents, Leroy and
Mary Walden of Pine River and a brother; Jamie.
Funeral services were conducted at the 'MacKenzie and
McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley;- Monday.

Taylor drain hookup maybe feasible
' Betty Ackert and Doris Johnston, Kincardine, attended the
August 8 Village Council meeting to ask permission to run the
Taylor Drain from -theirproperty, north of, the Lucknow
District Community Centre along the property line between
the Finlayson property and theirs down to the Community.
Centre, then along the south f the :Community = Centre to
hook up to. the Community C ntre drain at the east side.
They said that they had spok n with Stu Reavie, chairman
of the building committeef and ; e had told them the building
committee would give permission but they would have to get
Village Council's permission as well.
Coupeillor-Ab Murray told the women that the Community
Centre building committee was responsible for the building
and the property.. until construction was completed. He said,
this included erosion control, sodding, parking and drainage.
Until the community centre was completed, the village did not
have responsibility for it.
Council agreed with Murray that it was not their
responsibility to give permission for the drain, that it would
have to be permitted by the building committee.
Councillor Murray -:said :that ;the .-building committee had
been in consultation with theproject's engineer, Art Clark,
and Stu Reavie had indicated to Murray that Clark thought it
would be feasible to have the Taylor drain hook into the
Community Centre drain.
Mrs. Ackert, and Mrs. Johnston told Council they would go
back to the building committee to seek final approval.
Physical fitness testing van in Lucknow Tuesday
The Physical Fitness Assessment Program, a part of the
Ontario Government's "Fitness Ontario" will be operating in
Lucknow on August 22. •
Jeff Stapjeton, Glenna Gilroy, Barb MacFarlane and
Debbie Barr, a Fitness Ontario testing staff, will be testing
individuals' physical fitness, providing general lifestyle
information.
The test itself takes approximately 11/2 hours , to complete
Glenna Gilroy tests- Rose Peterson's lower back flexibility on
the flexibility board during preview testing fdr the Physical
Fltness Assessment Program at the Lucknow Arena on
Thursday. The program is part of the Fitness Ontario plan
implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Recreation in
1971» The aim of the program is to motivate .the inactive Jto.
become fit by providing individual fitness appraisals and to
provide general lifestyle information. Individual testing. costs
$12.00 and the Ontario Fitness Van will be in our community
again on August 22. If interested, you should register with
Bill Hunter at the Flog Service Station.

capacity (efficiency of the heart and vessels) test, tests of
muscular strength and endurance, a flexibility test and a
determination of percentage body fat and ideal body weight.
The test is private, personal and the results are kept
confidential.
As well as the practical section of the test, there is
a consulatation period during which the testee is provided
with an exercise prescription to suit his/her individual needs,
information brochures on various fitness topics and answers
to questions 'regarding fitness in general.
"The purpose of the program is not to •mass test in a
community for the sake of making money," said Jeff
Stapleton, "We are more concerned about leaving the public
with a positive feeling about the program generally and about
physical fitness specifically.
The Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation
implemented the "Fitness Ontario" program in 1977. It is an
11 part plan geared toward education and motivating the
citizens of Ontario to pursue a more physically active lifestyld,
The driving forces behind the inauguration of this program
were the generally low levels of fitness of Ontario adults and
the spiralling costs of medical services in the province.
The assessment program which will conduct the testing in
Lucknow is to motivate the inactive to become fit by providing
individual fitness appraisals, to provide general lifestyle
information, to motivate community members to promote
fitness in their region and to provide a provincial data base
regarding fitness levels of adults in Ontario.
The Fitness Ontario staff will be in Lucknow on August 22
and if you are interested in having -your physical fitness
assessed, register with Bill Hunter at the Fina Service
Station.
Lightning strikes
Wraith home
Lightning struck the home of Mrs. Jim Wraith on Havelock
Street around 10.30 a.m. Wednesday morning during a
thunderstorm.
Mrs. Wraith said she believes the lightning came in along
the clothes line. It made a hole in the bedroom wall and broke
the mirror on the dresser in the room.
