When John was offered a position as an operations analyst with Combustion Engineering in Ottawa, they decided to close the store, sell the stock and building, and move to Ottawa together as family. They found that the business was so: run down from the previous owner at the store; that it would take a long time to build it up again. They increased the business by 25 per cent the first month they had the store. Staples like bread, milk and meat are up over 100 per cent. Margaret found ghe could sell at prices 'under anyone in Wingham, but people would not shop at the store for all their groceries, to find out that her prices were cheaper. They are attracted to the chain stores: by big specials on a couple of items. If you want a variety of everything in the store, you have to invest about $2,000 a week says Margaret, and from that you wilIMake about $1,000. But only 17 per cent is profit after the overhead is paid. The hours were long because they were open from 8.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. every day except Saturday when they were open until 8.00 p.m. and Wednesday when they were closed. But then there were the hours keeping books and doing stock and even on Wednesday there were three travellers who came regularly. Margaret thinks the location would be excellent for a snack bar, variety store, giftware or antique shop. Just about every third or fourth person who comes in wants to know where they can get a eup of coffee or a sandwich. Margaret is looking forward`to having more spare time now that she will not be working 18 hour days.. She has her pilot's licence and wants to start flying again as soon as they move to Ottawa. She is the one who loves to travel and John who hates it, has been on business trips to Russia, Holland and Poland. They will miss the, country community where they lived for the past year, and especially the people who were so friendly. But they are looking ahead to being a family together in the year to come. !.1 Ii 1.
