Nursing Home Week was observed at the Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home in Lucknow with
entertainment on Saturday afternoon by the Grey Ox Band and an afternoon tea on Sunday.
The residents enjoyed the old tyme music of the band in the lounge.
Huron Tract spinners and
Weavers Guild
Midwestern Ontario
has acquired a new
organization. Fourteen
weavers and spinners
from Bruce, Huron and
Perth counties met
recently in Blyth to form
the "Huron Tract
•
Spinners ' and Weavers
Guild".
Ruth Knight • of
Goderich, the first
president of the fledgling
organization, said that
the purpose of the_guild is

weaving to the public.
She said that a guild is
an excellent vehicle for
local weavers to learn
from one another. For
that re.a.son, there are
tentative plans for
workshops, first with
guild members' talent;
but possibly later with
outside teachers.
Weaving is an old craft
in the Huron Tract. One
of the best known
weavers... from old is
Samuel Pentland, who
arrived in Huron County
in 1845, and whose loom is
still on display at the
Royal Ontario Museum in
Tgronto.
Mrs. Knight said that
some research into the
history of weaving in the
Huron Tract may be a
future project.
Mrs. Evelyn Hardy of
Goderich was elected
vice-president. Secretary
is Mrs. Mary McLeod of

Old age
security
raised
Increases in the Old .Age
Security pension, Guaran-
teed Income Supplement and
Spouse's Allowance, effect-
ive in July, .1978, were
announced today by Health
and Welfare Minister Mon-
ique Begin.
Increases in Old Age
Security pension and Guar-
anteed Income Supplement
payments represent the nin-
teenth quarterly escalation
based on the cost of living, as
provided for in the Old Age
Security Act since October,
1973.
The new monthly total at
the single rate for persons
receiving both the basic Old
Age Security pension and
maximum Guaranteed In=
come Supplement will be
$271.87.
For a married couple, both
pensioners, the combination
of the basic pension and
maximum supplement will
provide a payment of $518.62
for the couple monthly.
The basic Old Age Security
pension will rise in July to
$159.79 from the present
$156.66.
The Guaranteed Income
Supplement is paid to pen-
sioners whose income,- apart
from the Old Age Security
pension, is limited. The
amount of the supplement
varies";; in relation to the
amount of income.
The.maximum Guaranteed
Income Supplement for- a
single person, or a married
person whose spouse is not a
pensioner and is not receiv-
ing a Spouse's Allowance,
will go up in July to $112.08
from its current $109.88. The
maximum supplement for a
married couple, both pen-
sioners, will increase to
$99.52 each from $97.57.
Added to the basic pension,
this will give each married
pensioner $259.31 monthly,
or a total of $518.62 for the
couple.
The Spouse's Allowance is
paid to persons between 60
and 65 years of age who are
married to Old Age Security
pensioners and meet resid-
ence requirements. Entitle-
ment to a Spouse's Allow-
ance, and amount paid, is
based on yearly income.
The maximum Spouse's
Allowance will increase to
$259.31 .from $254.23, The
maximum Spouse's Allow-
ance is made up of an
amount equivalent to the
basic Old Age Security pen-
sion and the maximum
Guaranteed Income Supple-
ment at the married rate.
