Cholera has broken out
among hogs at Pine River
creamery where 150 hogs
were slaughtered by a gov-
ernment inspector and only
about ten were. found to be
free from the disease. The
carcasses were burned to-
gether with all the pens.
One by one the sturdy
pioneers, who endured the
hardships and privations a of
the early bush life in this
section, are passing away.
On Saturday, Mr. John
Gillies, who had been ill with
lung trouble for some
months, passed away at his
home. One' of the first
settlers in the township of
Kinloss, he died on the farm
where he locatedin 1852.
A severe storm of wind
and rain passed over the
village of Crewe on Wednes-
day damaging Robt. Hasty's
barn besides blowing a
chimney off Hugh Fergus-
on's house, breaking fruit
trees in several places.
Ashfield's Centenarian,
John Barnby died on Friday
last, June 1, at the age of
106. Although deaf and
' blind, John was cheerful,
happy and delighted to talk
with those who made them-
selves known to him. Last
month he contacted flu,
which developed into bron-
chitis and he died early
Friday evening. He celebrat-
ed his 106th birthday, last
March 11.
Lucknow was pretty well
deserted, especially by the
younger element,, on Tues-
day evening.''They were all
away to Goderich to join the
crowd which annually meets
the excursion steamer, Grey-
hound, and to take in the
"moonlight", if there was
room.
The Rev. C. H. MacDon-
ald, Mr. Wm. Connell, and
Mr. J. Lane of Kinlough have
gone to Regina to attend the
General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church. Mr.
Connell will make a trip to
the Pacific Coast before
returning home.
Alexander MacKinnon,
85 -year-old Kinloss farmer
was instantly killed in a
plunge down the stairway of
his burning cabin on Sunday
morning. His body was
discovered and removed be-
fore flames enveloped the
structure. Destruction of the
building removes one of the
few remaining log structures
in the district, landmark of
the pioneer' area.
A resolution was adopted
at the annual meeting of the
Lucknow Business Men's
Association on Monday night
requesting the local plant of
Silverwood Dairies to remain
open on Saturday evenings,
as formerly. Russ Button was
elected president of the
association •to succeed Gord-
on Montgomery.
Elva Elizabeth was the
name given to the infant
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey Ritchie of Zion who
was born on Coronation Day.,
June 2. To mark this special
birthday the baby received a
silver spoon from Governor-
General Massey.
Aubrey's Observations
BY AUBREY HIGGINS
Hello Folks! This is the same old guy, living and
calling Pinecrest Manor home.
Not one of my previous articles were dictated, nor were
they censored.
-They have all been my own private thoughts, and
published as such and this article will be strictly of the
same basis.
I believe, that, when a man is nominated for public
office, he should consider, what it would require of him if
he accpeted the nomination, in order to fulfill what would
be expected of him.
I do not think any man should.accept a nomination until
he is absolutely sure he was fully prepared to give of
himself to any subject that comes before him during his
term of office.
If he is elected, by the voters of that municipality, he
should be willing to accept a majority vote on any subject;
and abide by it whether it is his views on the subject or not.
For what other reason should we have a five man board
in any community?
For what other purpose is it necessary to hold an
election and elect a five man board?
It would cost the taxpayer much less to simply appoint
one man and tell him to go ahead and do whatever he
thought was best. But it has been proven in the past, that
in many cases giving one man too much power is harmful.
Even at the expense of the reader thinking this to be so
much childish prattle, they are my true beliefs in the
quality of a man who should be responsiblefor the safety
and well being of those who have put their faith in him by
voting him into office over other contestants.
Personally, I can see no honour in being on the
governing body of any municipality, unless at the end of
the term each man can just sit back and say, "look at our
record", and be very proud of what that record shows.
I am a firm believer in progress in all things. This leads
me to say thatoa council should make definite decisions
about the future,, not just "pass the buck" on to their
successors and leave it for them to decide.

I fully understand the problem of keeping the mill rate
down, but in doing this, is it the best for the municipality?
By doing this, are they not in every possibility not going to
make it twice as much of an increase by putting things off
until a later date.
There has been one example of this in the last few years.
Property that could have been bought at very moderate
price and would have served a great need was . not
acquired, but Real Estate men have made. an excessive
profit on the same property.
I, in no way am condemning anyone, but simply trying
to prove. a point.
Foresight in my opinion is one . of the most needed
requirements in 'a councilman, or any other politician.
If they do not plan, for things to come, how can there
possibily be any progress- even for years ahead.
We have known, that we are going to have to have a
sewage system for several years now. What real solid
ground work has been done, outside of having several
different organizations give a survey and an estimate
which increases by several thousands of dollars each year?
After what I have written I can. only say, why?
Now may I ask, what action was taken on the letter
written byme to the' Bruce County Board of Education,.
and immediately forwarded to Village Council as the
responsible party.
I am referring to the "Slow School Crossing" signs, that
I believe should be on Bob Street for the protection of the
number of children that cross this intersection each school
day.
Traffic at this point has increased at least ten fold in the
last two years and there is nothing in the neighbourhood to
tell the travelling public that there is a school in the
neighbourhood.
All of the children cross this intersection where possibly
only half of them cross where there is a crossing guard. I
believe that these children's lives are just as valuable as on
Main Street.

My elderly aunt signed a release from
Canadian Pacific without first unpacking,
stating that all goods had arrived in a
satisfactory condition, and that nothing was
missing. Unfortunately one box. WAS
missing which contained dishes and other
odds and ends. Plus, two bed slats are also
missing and a vase has been broken and a
small table badly scratched. The railway
claims NO RESPONSIBILITY, but I don't
believe she was fully aware of what she was
signing. Can nothing be done for her?
The C.P. graciously sent someone to visit
your aunt to nelp her fill out a claims form.
Since then they placed a tracer to try and
locate the missing articles. Since that has
failed to turn them up, they have paid the full
amount of your aunt's claim, and she now has
a cheque for $85.00.

I am a widow with four married children
who have started sneaking things out of my
house while 1 am not looking. Many of my
late husband's tools have now disappeared as
well as some antiques that 1 treasured.
I don't know if they think I don't notice
these things gine, or if 1 should just let them
go ahead, and take everything.
What would you advise?
Since it's a personal problem, (as I take "it
you don't want to lay any theftcharges) then
the answer you seek has to come from
yourself. Whether you wish to inform. your
children that you don't appreciate what's
been happening; or if you want to go on as if
you either don't know or care, is a decision
that only you can make.
